Double Fine CEO Tim Shafer: “We have complete creative freedom, we are glad to be a part of Microsoft – it kept its promise”

Tim Shafer, founder and current head of the studio Double fine, which is part of the gaming division of the corporation Microsoft, talked to the resource GamesIndustry.biz in connection with the premiere of an adventure game Psychonauts 2 (our review).

One of the central topics of the conversation was the current position of Double Fine as an integral part of Microsoft. As Shafer noted, the studio is doing great. She is delighted to be partnering with the American giant.

“Now we have real creative freedom. No one has delved into the production of Psychonauts, questioning any of our decisions. We are completely trusted for all the artistic content, but along with this, the studio also has additional resources, such as the ability to test the project for a general accessibility, and the correct approach to mental health issues. In general, there are tools, and there is the opportunity to create what we like. And that’s great. Microsoft management has fully kept all the promises made to us when buying the studio, “- explained Tim Shafer.

Today when Psychonauts 2 finally reaching the audience, Schaefer and his team plan to take the next step. It is likely that in the near future the studio will start producing several different projects at once.

“During the creation of Psychonauts 2, we had a period where the entire studio worked hard to finish the game. But now we will definitely return to the scheme with several parallel developments. At least until the situation repeats itself. Who knows. “Our team does not have any hard and fast rules, but we want to deal with several games at once, and for these purposes we have enough ideas,” the developer continued.

Regardless of the number of new Double Fine projects, Shafer is confident that the studio will continue to work on completely original games – the developers want to take a break from re-releases and sequels, and really surprise the audience.

“[Работа над переизданиями и сиквелами] in a sense, it was perceived as a meeting with things familiar and comfortable for you for a long time. I enjoyed working on re-releases, doing adventure games, creating Psychonauts 2. But now, together with the team, we are really obsessed with the idea of creating something completely new, something that can surprise the players, “concluded Tim Shafer.

Recall that Psychonauts 2 is available for purchase on all current PlayStation, Xbox, and PC consoles. Service subscribers Xbox Game Pass can download the project without any extra charge.
