Microsoft begins testing Auto HDR on Windows 10 – over a thousand PC games supported

Microsoft added to the latest test build of the OS Windows 10 support Auto HDRintroduced with the Xbox Series X / S consoles.

If you have a compatible monitor, the feature automatically adds HDR enhancements to games that use standard dynamic range and is currently being tested as part of the program Windows Insider

“HDR is an image / video technology that allows the highlights and darks in a digital scene to be shown in greater detail than before. In video games, the increased color gamut and brightness of HDR allows for a more immersive and realistic experience.”

Auto HDR is reportedly currently available in 1000+ games with DirectX 11 and DirectX 12… To visually demonstrate how the technology works, Microsoft published an image from the PC version Gears 5: Hivebusters comparing the heatmap of luminance in SDR, Auto HDR and native HDR modes.

“Grayscale is used to showcase all areas of a scene that can be fully displayed on traditional SDR displays, while rainbow colors show areas that can only be displayed on HDR-capable displays.”

“Note that in the center and right images, highlights on goggles and helmet show more detail. HDR and Auto HDR are not only designed to enhance brightness, but also to bring out details in a scene using an extended range of darkening shadows and lighting highlights.” …

While Auto HDR processing requires some GPU processing power, Microsoft declares that use of this feature should not have a significant impact on gameplay
