Windows 10 update breaks user profiles again – review

Some users who have installed the latest Windows 10 updates, including KB4549951, report profile problems. As it turned out, after the reboot, the system refused to enter the current profile, and the data from it could be moved or deleted.

Update KB4549951 itself was released on April 14, after which complaints about the loss of documents and photos appeared. The bottom line is that after applying the patch, Windows renames the regular user profile folder, and then creates and loads a temporary profile.

The main one is moved to a folder with the extension “.ooo” or “.bak”, so its data can be extracted from there. It is also reported that you can simply restart Windows at least 6-8 times in a row, after which the data will be restored.

In tech support, companies recommend creating a new account and transferring the data there manually from a temporary account. Although the best option is to create a backup before installing the updates.
