The stars of “The Witcher” and “Stranger Things” converge on the same screen: Review of the film “Enola Holmes”

Directors and writers have bullied legacy for years Arthur Conan Doyle, releasing their own versions of the adventures of the genius detective. But the company Netflix went even further, offering its subscribers a film adaptation of teenage literature from Nancy Springer, who by her 72 years managed to write six books about the investigations of Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister, Enole Holmes. The film, which brought together a great cast, practically follows the original idea, making small changes to the script, some of which are only beneficial to the project.

So, at the end of the 19th century, England is on the verge of great changes, and suffragists are preparing to fight for the suffrage of all women in the United Kingdom. Left alone with Enola’s mother (played by Millie Bobby Brown) grows up as a smart and lively child, and Eudoria Holmes (Helena Bonham Carter) prepares her for the hardships of a harsh life outside the estate. But one day the mother disappears, and Enola meets the Sherlock siblings (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin) who want to send her to the boarding house of noble maidens. The only way out for the heroine is to run away and try to find her missing mother, and at the same time unravel her first amazing case.

Since Nancy Springer wrote literature for teenage girls at the beginning of this century, Jack Thorne and Harry Bradbear (β€œKilling Eve”) Decided to modernize history, adding a pinch of feminism and SJW-filth.

The heroine breaks the fourth wall, communicating directly with the viewer, demonstrates her strength and independence and saves a sweet and very rich white guy from death several times. Well, then everything is according to the knurled alternative history: a black maid teaches self-defense lessons for women, Lestrade is played by a Kenyan Pakistani (Adil Akhtar), and in a closed boarding school for noble girls there are black and Asian girls and teachers, which looks at least strange for England in the 19th century.

Otherwise β€œEnola Holmes”Is a teenage adventure with a love story, funny situations and well-written characters. True, Cavill, instead of a brilliant detective, plays Superman, who has never picked up a smoking pipe in the frame, and Mycroft is simply exposed as a mercantile scum. Millie Bobby Brown looks very organic in the image of a young detective, and you can see that dresses are much more suitable for her than worn denim overalls. Well, this is clearly her best movie role.

For the rest, the authors break and crumple the story with two parallel plot lines too much and lose the tempo they gained at the beginning, ending the plot in mid-sentence. In addition, Enola practically does not use her deductive skills in the frame, focusing more on emotions and memories from the past. And this is disappointing. Fights, chases, dressing up, first love and dashing twists and turns – everything is in order in the film. But something is missing, and the other half seems too naive, childish and protracted. Well, the literary fundamental principle with the quality of works at the level of Dontsova clearly let us down.

However, there is no doubt that the film adaptation will be continued. “Enola Holmes” was the second most successful premiere for the streaming service Netflix, and the creators have five more books in store. But watching this movie, if you are not loyal fans of Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill, is clearly not worth it.
