The Demigods Lie And Won’t Get Up Again: A Total War Saga: Troy Review

When I sat down at Troy, I thought that the team that previously released Thrones of britannia (subtitle Saga only build confidence). In reality, ears stick out of the new game Total War: Warhammer II: unique factional features, “magic” (agents in the game can send curses or pray for the welfare of the nation) and even several options for resources. The latter should be discussed separately. In addition to gold, the role of which has been reduced, the hero has access to stones, wood and bronze, but food has priority. To be honest, this makes little sense, because all the attention will be paid to food, because it is needed to recruit basic units, recruit heroes, sacrifice, and even the actions of agents.

However, some elements migrated from Total war: three kingdoms… So, now you can exchange provinces with neighbors. The ability to customize characters has not gone anywhere, even if the system is not so confused: there are three slots for equipment (weapons, armor and warhorse), a skill tree and a panel for an entourage. Troy does something even better: in the diplomacy window, you can see in what relationship the opponent is with other factions.

However, in general, the new part Total war I’m mired in annoying micromanagement, and I have to keep several variables in my head at once, which may contradict each other. There is nothing wrong with complex mechanics, but here is a system of relationships from Three kingdoms (when everyone was relatives to each other) did not bother so much.

Not all is well with tactical battles. The basics remain the same, but the details are different. The fact is that in Troy the focus is on the infantry, but there are no mounted units (there are chariots and “centaurs”). Light infantry is blown away for them, but this creates certain problems. It feels like the battlefields in the game are quite small, but this is offset by the terrain: many hills for archers and bushes with forests and ambushes. But since all armies consist of 20+ infantry units supported by archers, slingers and spear throwers, the front line turns out to be very wide, which is why opponents constantly found ambush regiments. As a result, the brawls boiled down to who has more units.

But the authors have tried to optimize. On settings similar to Three kingdomsTroy has a third more frames per second than last year’s game in the series. At the same time, new chips appeared: soldiers now interact with vegetation and water, which can be customized. But at the same time, for some reason, TAA anti-aliasing is not available, which makes the item with image scaling look meaningless.

It is also important to note the visual style, inspired by ancient Greek painting. If you play with the camera on the global map, you can see that in the middle plan the mountains become schematic and are colored brown (like amphora), and the sky is a flat image.

But temporary exclusivity Epic Games Store might piss off fans of the series. And it’s not just that all the past parts Total war were available in Steam… The fact is that earlier Creative assembly created a universal launcher to run all the games in the franchise … which is not available in EGS. Nobody has yet brought support for fan mods, although the community has always been active in this area.
