Nintendo explains its approach to new company purchases

Answering investors’ questions, the President Nintendo Shuntaro Furukawa said that he is ready to buy third-party companies in special cases. In particular, the platform holder can look closely at teams with promising technological developments. The determining factor is the dynamically changing market of modern technologies.

And in this case, we are not just talking about game studios. For example, in 2011, Nintendo bought a European company Mobiclip (Actimagine), which specialized in video codecs and was responsible for the video compression technology widely used in games on portable consoles. She later turned into Nintendo European Research & Development and managed to work on a variety of projects, including stable 3D on New Nintendo 3DS and emulation of DS games on Wii U

“We need a certain amount of cash reserve that will ensure the overall financial stability of Nintendo. However, if we have to quickly respond to emerging technological innovations, we do not exclude the purchase of companies with promising developments,” explained Shuntaro Furukawa.

Speaking directly about game studios, Furukawa already saidthat Nintendo is not interested in “trivial expansion with a new workforce.” The company is extremely selective in its approach to the issue of acquisitions and makes deals very rarely.

In early 2023, Nintendo bought a Canadian studio Next Level Gameswith which she worked closely for a long time. Prior to that, she acquired a Japanese Monolith Soft

“It [Next Level Games] our long-term partner with whom we have worked for many years in the creation of games. And we decided that we could improve the quality and speed of development by making it our subsidiary, “explained Furukawa.

“We don’t blindly buy companies for game development resources. We don’t think a simple extension will add value to the entertainment that Nintendo provides.”

As of March 31, 2023, Nintendo and all of its divisions employ 6,547 people… For comparison, in Ubisoft more than 18 thousand employees, and Electronic Arts almost 10 thousand people work.

Nintendo Earned Nearly $ 6 Billion in Operating Profit in Last Fiscal Year, which is a record among all platform holders for the entire existence of the market.
