Naughty Dog Helps Sony Improve DualSense Vibration in PS5 Backward Compatibility Games

After the patch released a few days ago for The Last of Us: Part II with support for 60 FPS on Playstation 5 some users decided to return to the project and noticed the improved vibration when playing with a controller DualSense

Co-head of The Last of Us 2 Kurt Margenau said that in fact this was achieved not with a fresh patch, but thanks to a controller firmware update released back in April.

He noted that he shared feedback with the DualSense engineering team a few months ago to help the team improve the timings, intensity and “texture” of the tactile response of the gamepad in backward compatibility games that were originally designed for DualShock 4

The fact is that these gamepads have completely different vibration mechanisms. Inside the DualShock 4 there are two rotating weights of different sizes, while the DualSense also has two, but they move back and forth and can express frequency and amplitude with extremely high accuracy and low latency, almost like a speaker. The solution turned out to be the firmware of the new controller, which receives the old signals intended to spin the vibration motors in the DS4, and simulates the resulting vibration with its weights using a completely different mechanical method.

Thus, the DualSense is even able to simulate the rumble sensation of the vibration motors in the DualShock 4. And all this is achieved without interfering with the game codes.
