The authors of Returnal, discussing the game, got lost in a time loop – Igromania

On the channel Playstation a video was released on a fresh exclusive PS5 Returnal, where the authors of the game themselves fell into a time loop.

The game director became the participants of the story Harry Krueger and head of marketing Michael Haveri – the first brought the second to the deserted and suspicious forest, which he himself often visits for inspiration. During their journey, the conversation still turned to the game.

Krueger noted that when developing dark adventures Selena on the planet Atropos the authors tried to raise the concept of “gameplay above all” to a new level. While also enhancing the player experience with engaging storytelling – while retaining elements of past work.

Among the main sources of inspiration for the game, Kruger named “dark” science fiction and works of Howard Lovecraft… In particular, the topic of the impact of various chthonic horrors on the human mind was important.

At the same time, the creators did not intend to scare the player, rather, they wanted to create a constant anxious feeling. The soundtrack from the author of the music to “Solstice”as well as 3D sound.

In addition, we were talking about the design of enemies, some of which were inspired by the inhabitants of the deep sea. And when creating different biomes, the developers wanted to achieve biodiversity so that the locations were different from each other.

While the authors were talking about the project, they managed to go several times in the same direction, at the same time they came across a house that was extremely similar to a game one – and, like Selena, they were literally stuck inside their own story.
