Sales plan Crunchyroll was approved back in the fall of 2023. The fact is that the conglomerate’s debts exceed $ 150 billion, and a large shareholder represented by an investment company Elliot Management demanded to get rid of some assets.

However, negotiations stalled. On the one hand, the new management of WarnerMedia wanted to keep Crunchyroll in order to strengthen its position as a streaming platform. HBO Max… However, due to the pandemic, cinemas are not working, which negatively affects the financial condition of AT&T.

On the other hand, the parties could not agree on the price of the asset. The Japanese were offered to buy Crunchyroll for $ 1.5 billion, but they considered the price too high.

The new price is $ 975 million. The Crunchyroll streaming platform is used by about 70 million people, but only three million of them pay for a subscription.

Sony’s interest is that the company is slowly evolving into an anime giant. In 2017, the Japanese bought out the major anime distributor Funimation, they also own the studio Aniplex Inc.who produced and helped promote the anime “Fullmetal alchemist“(Fullmetal Alchemist), Sword Art Online and “Demon Cuts Blade“(Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba).

For the speed of ticket sales in Japan, he set a new record, overtaking the cartoon released in 2001 Hayao MiyazakiSpirited Away“(Spirited away).

Due to the pandemic, there have been problems with the production of films and TV series with live actors, so streaming services are increasingly beginning to invest in the production of cartoons. But the difficulty lies in the fact that in recent years Western animation has been in crisis, and the quality of many projects is frankly lame. The situation is also not improved by the fact that some services and TV channels are trying to save money.

Sony is well positioned to take the lead in anime streaming. However, the company is already breathing in her back Netflix, which is actively expanding this direction. So, she recently announced a collaboration with studios Science SARU, Studio Mir, NAZ and MAPPA.
