Among video game developers, only Hideo Kojima knows how to advertise himself well. Everyone knows about this Japanese, and even those who haven’t seen the games he created. Kojima often becomes a hero of memes, gives interviews, actively leads social networks, and the press regularly recalls how he changed the industry. From the outside it may seem that only he can do games in Japan. This is not true.

Japan gave the world a huge number of talented developers who have influenced modern games. Someone did this with just one interesting mechanics, which subsequently evolved and developed, and someone came up with something radically new. To some extent, these people have formed many features of the games that we encounter every day. We will talk about these geniuses in the material.

Shinji Mikami

Shinji Mikami

Shinji Mikami is considered one of the founders of the horror genre in video games. He joined Capcom in 1990, joined a small development team, and began making games. Its leader was Tokuro Fujiwara (one of Capcom’s top managers), and according to Mikami, he was extremely strict. “Sometimes I managed to get home from work just two days a week,” Mikami said.

First, Mikami and his colleagues designed three Disney franchise games: Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Goof Troop and Disney’s Aladdin (yes, the Japanese made our favorite childhood game!). After their release, Mikami was instructed to develop horror – so the first part of Biohazard, known to us as Resident Evil, was born.

Resident Evil HD Reissue

Resident Evil brought fame to the entire survival horror genre and brought it out of the niche of “games not for everyone.” After the release of Biohazard, it became fashionable to play horror, and the series received numerous sequels and developed into a powerful franchise. Films and cartoons are made on it, toys are released and so on. The total circulation of Resident Evil totals tens of millions of copies sold.

Mikami did not work on every Resident Evil, but most of the games were successful. And it was he who created RE4 as we know it today. At the time of release, she combined all the elements that set the industry a further vector of development: aiming over the shoulder, QTE, pumping weapons, and so on. Resident Evil 4 has affected games more than you might think. After it, a similar camera appeared in many action games, and QTE has long been entrenched in the industry.

Resident evil 4

After many years at Capcom, Mikami left the company. He did not like the fact that it grew and turned into a corporation in which it is difficult to promote new ideas – for the developer, this was a key point. At first, Mikami freelance and participated in the creation of games such as Vanquish and Shadows of the Damned.

In May 2010, Mikami opened his own gaming studio Tango Gameworks. According to the game designer, he wanted to assemble a team in which they would not be afraid to express ideas. In October of that year, ZeniMax Media, which owns Bethesda and id Software, bought the studio. Financial stability allowed Mikami to unveil Tango’s debut game, The Evil Within.

The Evil Within 2

This is a horror that combines elements of Resident Evil and psychedelic horror films. The game was released in 2014 and received positive reviews from critics and users. In 2017, the sequel was released, which cemented the success of the original.

Shinji Mikami is currently working on a new game – GhostWire: Tokyo. It was announced at E3 2019, but the authors did not really say anything – they limited themselves to a short, albeit very stylish trailer. Since then, news about the game has not appeared, but Bethesda will probably tell something about it this summer.

Teaser Project G.G.

Project G.G. – A new company title, the story of which revolves around a boy who can grow in size. There are no details, but the authors say that it will be an unusual action. And you don’t have to worry about it – knowing Camia, he does not know how to do the usual action games.

Hideki Kamiya invented the slasher genre and made it the way we know it today. If not for him, then there would have been no God of War and a dozen other titles where you need to beautifully wet your opponents, memorize combinations and set records in the style of “apply 100 shots in a row.”

Hidetaka Miyazaki

Hidetaka Miyazaki

You might not even know about the existence of Miyazaki, but you surely heard about his games. After all, he developed Demon’s Souls, which paved the way for Dark Souls. It was Miyazaki who made us suffer.

Little is known about the youth of a game designer, since he does not like to talk about himself even during an interview. Like everyone else, he graduated from university and went to work, and then suddenly decided to become a game designer and got a job at FromSoftware. At first, Miyazaki was an ordinary programmer and helped the team with the Armored Core franchise. The Japanese did not hesitate to push their ideas to the leadership and intervene in the processes with his vision. More often than not, he succeeded, so over time, a credit of trust from the authorities increased.

Demon’s souls

At some point, Miyazaki noticed that one of FromSoftware’s internal teams was developing a prototype called Demon’s Souls. The process was not in the best way. The team did not have a common vision of how the game should turn out. As a result, Miyazaki took advantage of the loyalty of the leadership and led the development. After that, features familiar to all fans of contemporary FromSoftware creativity began to appear in Demon’s Souls: a third-person view, an intricate storyline, boss battles and a high level of complexity.

At the same time, Miyazaki did not come up with most of the ideas personally, but took FromSoftware from previous works. But he managed something else – he combined them and created a completely new genre, which later will be popularly called souls-like. Demon’s Souls itself showed a weak start in sales – not only because of its unusualness, but also because of its exclusivity for the PlayStation 3. However, thanks to word of mouth and a dedicated community, game sales grew every week. Perhaps it was only because of this that Miyazaki was instructed to continue.

Dark souls remastered

So there was Dark Souls. In it, Miyazaki walked to the fullest – he came up with an even more confusing ENT, which was served through the environment and notes; boss battles have become much more difficult and interesting; the combat system was made even harder. Miyazaki linked his approach to building the plot in Dark Souls with reading books from childhood: he preferred difficult works and sometimes did not understand what he was reading about, so in some places he had to think through events and fantasize.

After the success of the first Dark Souls, Miyazaki’s career skyrocketed. The game designer was promoted and made president of FromSoftware, so management became part of his job. The next two games of the Dark Souls series were developed without the close involvement of Miyazaki – he acted as a consultant and only occasionally helped the team tune in the right direction. Instead of working on Dark Souls, Miyazaki set about creating his dream game, Bloodborne.

Bloodborne

This is an action with Dark Souls mechanics, but instead of gloomy fantasy, the game had a Victorian setting mixed with Howard Lovecraft’s fantasies. At the same time, Miyazaki never said that he was inspired by the writer’s work – a coincidence? The Bloodborne gameplay was slightly different from the original due to the increased pace. The battles in it are very fast, and the game in every way motivates the user to take risks and act aggressively. The enemy managed to strike? Take a few lunges and recoup some of your health. Does the boss attack fast? It does not matter, instead of slow rolls, the main character can make a quick jerk to the side.

Bloodborne was released only on the PlayStation 4 and so “shot” that it is now considered one of the main exclusives of the console. It’s not the first year that players have been asking Miyazaki for a sequel, but so far there is no information about him – well, this Japanese does not like to make sequels.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

The last game released by the game designer is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and it is no longer so similar to its predecessors. You can even jump in this game! And there is no multiplayer, which at one time made a lot of noise in the industry. But it still has the same ruthless mechanics and chic bossfights.

Now Hidetaka Miyazaki continues to develop FromSoftware’s business, while participating in game development. The company’s next product will be Elden Ring – another variation of Dark Souls, but with an open world and self-immolation mechanics. World-famous writer George Martin, author of the Song of Ice and Fire series, helps with the title script. Details about the game are few, but they may appear this summer.

Elden ring

These three developers have done more for the industry than you can imagine. Shinji Mikami explained with an example that horror can be attractive to the mass consumer. For this, he should be idolized not only by igrodely, but also by horror film directors. Hideki Kamiya gave the world the best of its kind gameplay concept – play cool, play stylish. Well, Hidetaka Miyazaki showed that you don’t have to talk with gamers, chew on them every story move or reduce the complexity of the gameplay – if the game is successful, they will buy it and so on.
