Old games are often remembered fondly. The times when the only console was “Dandy” with a couple of cartridges now seem to be something very distant and romantic, and the games of those days are much more sincere than modern ones. And nevertheless, among them there were both bad projects and good ones – the industry in this regard has not changed that much. But there is one thing that seems to be gone forever, and its name is bad text endings. In the NES era, there were often really cool games with simply monstrous endings, which this article is devoted to.

“In the past, we received one thanks and were simply happy.”

Far from being the easiest shoot’em up about the heroic deed of a pilot in World War II. The player alone has to break through the armada of the Japanese air force (which is surprising considering the fact that the game was created by the Japanese). Upon reaching Tokyo, the final goal of the plane, all the player gets is a screen with the simple word Congratulation. No exclamation mark or plural. The word has long become a meme in the English-speaking environment: gamers often joke that the developers spared even two congratulations.

The first game about the adventure of the legendary four offered a fairly varied gameplay. The final goal was not only to defeat Shredder, but also to capture a special laser capable of returning Splinter to human form. On the way, of course, it was necessary to save April, neutralize the mined dam (this level is still a nightmare for many) and fight Bebop and Rocksteady. And all for the sake of Splinter to say thank you in the final, April called for pizza (a ton of which was eaten during the passage), and in the final chord the game gave out a laconic “The adventure of turtles has come to an end.”

When even the game offends those who have no friends

A cute arcade game about dragons spitting soap bubbles hurts the player differently. The fact is that if you complete it alone, then the game will simply show a bad ending. And to get a good one, be kind, come along with a friend. But if you walk together, then everything is much better: Bobby and Bubby turn into people, save their beloved ones (as in most games of that time) and admire the big beautiful Happy End inscription.

The same ending

Monstrous in itself, the game has become a cult at once for several reasons. To begin with, here you can defeat Jason by throwing stones at him. For some reason, the player is hunted by zombies, and in case of loss, the monumental You and your friends are dead is issued. Game Over (“You and your friends are dead. Game over”). The finale, however, is no worse (or no better, how you look): the game with a mockery says something like “You finally managed to defeat Jason … or not? We won’t tell you! The end”.

An interesting example of how porting can ruin an overall good game. Initially, Athena was released on arcade machines and was well received by gamers and critics, but its port on the NES turned out to be monstrous. Not only did the game become many times more complicated and lost many of the original features, it also gave an amazing ending: in the final scene, the main character simply stands against the background of a static picture to cheerful music. Many were expecting at least Congratulation or the end credits, but alas – look at the standard frame from the game.
