DOOM or Quake? Phil Spencer already knows what’s new at id Software

In a recent episode of the Dropped Frames podcast, chapter Xbox Phil Spencer talked about how Microsoft manages its 23 studios. The company has a unique approach, he says, ranging from hands-off to direct collaboration between studios, funding and recruiting. Spencer is in constant contact with internal teams regarding future plans and recently had a conversation with id Software.

“Yesterday I had a phone call with Marty Stratton. We discussed id and their roadmap. It was very interesting. Always happy to call the studios and talk about what they are going to do.”

“I’m lucky to be able to talk to third parties like this, look at the schedule for three years ahead and discuss future plans.”

So what is id working on? Perhaps this will be the next DOOM. In March 2023, creative director Hugo Martin stated that id Software has ideas for future games in the series, which is in line with earlier announcements about DOOM Eternal in 2018, which said the studio wasn’t just making a new game. but builds up the universe. In addition, there are rumors about the impending restart of Quake, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

Throughout the conversation, Spencer also noted that the Xbox’s goal is to empower its teams to express themselves.

“We want to give studios the opportunity to become the best versions of themselves. Some of them choose to stay out of the way and are allowed to do what they have always done. Others ask for technical or marketing input when it comes to funding.”
