Phil Spencer: idTech engine could be a great tool for internal Xbox studios

After Microsoft officially completed the acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the corporation received all assets at its disposal Bethesda, including not only the franchises and internal studios of the publishing house, but also its technologies, including game engines.

In particular, this concerns idTechon which the latest DOOMs are built, and Xbox CEO Phil Spencer is quite excited about the potential of the engine sponsored by Xbox Game Studios.

Speaking at a recent Microsoft-Bethesda Roundtable, Spencer admitted that in the future, id Software may well assist in the development of new shooters from The coalition and 343 Industries

“When you think about what id Software can do and how it is partnering with The Coalition and 343 Industries in the FPS space, I think the opportunities are amazing.”

It is unlikely that 343 Industries will leave to make games for idTech, since the studio has its own brand new proprietary engine. SlipSpaceon which is based Halo: Infinite, however, in the case of The Coalition, the developers of the series Gears of war still use third-party Unreal Engine, and moving to the internal toolbox really makes sense in this case.

However, Spencer sees idTech as more than just a shooter engine and believes it could be used much more broadly across the various Xbox Game Studios teams.

“We haven’t really discussed the future of id Tech and what that might mean for the Xbox yet. We have tons of studios doing a ton of different jobs and I loved Marty Stretton’s account of how they worked with Bethesda teams on idTech. envisioned this on a new level. One example of what we can offer our framework with idTech is to make it a tool that many of our developers can use to realize their vision. “

During the roundtable, Microsoft and Bethesda discussed a few other things. In addition to the announcement of new games for Xbox Game Pass, the company commented on the exclusivity of future releases and talked about the planned summer presentation
