Disney shuts down Ice Age Blue Sky Studios

Deadline announced in exclusive material that Disney is closing Blue Sky Studios – the former 20th Century Fox animation arm that created the franchise “glacial period“and other famous cartoons, including”Robots“, “Rio“and recent”Camouflage and espionage“.

It is noted that the decision to close the production of projects at Blue Sky Studios is related to the current economic realities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.… Maintaining another animation studio for Disney was no longer viable.

Blue Sky will cease to exist in April this year, and its 450 employees will be laid off. All of the studio’s intellectual property will remain part of Disney, and some franchises will be continued in the future by other divisions of the company. In particular, a series with the characters of the “Ice Age” has already been launched for streaming service Disney +

Blue Sky’s last announced work was an animated film “Nimona“from Oscar-winning director Patrick Osborne… The tape was planned to be released on January 14, 2023, but now all work on it is stopped and the project is canceled.

Following the Fox / Disney merger in August 2019, it was announced that Walt Disney Animation Studios President Andrew Millstein had been named co-president of Blue Sky Studios alongside Rob Byrd. After the closure of Blue Sky, both are expected to retire.

Blue Sky Studios was founded in 1987 and has produced a total of 13 full-length animated films since then, grossing $ 5.9 billion worldwide.
