Tales of Returns: Our First Impressions of Tales of Arise

New part Tales of, created for the 25th anniversary of the role-playing series, combines both funny dialogues and vivid characters that have become familiar to the franchise, and some modern trends. Recently the company Bandai namco provided the press with a brief opportunity to personally get acquainted with Tales of ariseand we are ready to share our first impressions. This is, in general, a traditional Tales of with a new story

It should be noted right away that already at this stage the game is fully localized for the Russian market. She meets the menu in Russian, with all descriptions and subtitles.

In a small demo, the developers introduced us to six characters from the plot squad, between whom you can switch, and offered to explore part of the territory of Elde Menancia – the third region in the game. In the final release, you will be taken here approximately 10-15 hours after the start of the plot. Among the heroes to choose from were Alfen – a swordsman with a large arsenal of techniques, Shion – a typical tsundere with a gun capable of inflicting ranged damage and healing a squad, Rinvel – a magician with strong astral spells, Low – a melee melee fighter, Kisara – a knight with a huge with a hammer and a shield, capable of taking a lot of damage on herself, and Dohalim is a versatile soldier. I played for the sorceress Rinvel.

In the process of exploring the location, you can avoid strong enemies and collect the resources necessary to restore health or craft. Some parts of the map have special markings hinting at the presence of treasures and caches. The hero under control is able to calmly swim in the water, jump or climb ledges.

The battles take place in separate arenas in real time and are reminiscent of the fresh Final Fantasy. The screen is flooded with flashes of numerous special effects, characters, making strikes, utter typical JRPG phrases like “Get a charge!”, And monsters have an available hit zone. Your hero can cast available attacks, and they take time to recharge depending on the cost of action points. In battles, they also allow you to activate special blows (Boost Attack) of both your central hero and other characters, or change the directly controlled fighter. All this also takes time to recharge. Over time, super-strong paired special moves (Boost Strike) are unlocked, which will be expanded to the final version.

By combining normal attacks and special combinations, you can defeat both regular opponents and bosses. There are four heroes in the main squad. Two more serve as support. Naturally, team members can be rearranged. In a special menu, they give you a choice of tactics for the behavior of party members on the battlefield. I relied on healing and an aggressive attack, thanks to which I easily defeated the only boss in the demo – Praying Mantis.

For fans of the Tales of Arise series, it retains anime continuity with jokes about underpants, large shields and soft balls of rage. Shion acts like an annoying element and will apparently piss off most of the game. The main character is cold and courageous. The rest offer variations of certain anime stamps. Not all dialogues are voiced.

The visuals of Tales of Arise are at their best – here the series takes a leap. The game looks much nicer than Tales of Berseria, which is not surprising. The characters are drawn with great attention to detail and are pleasing to the eye.

At this stage, Tales of Arise is presented as a traditional Tales of with bright and fast fights, which stands out from its predecessors primarily by the level of graphics and should be liked by fans. What will be there on the release – we will figure it out already in the review.

Tales of Arise will be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S and PC on September 10, 2023.
