Mass Effect screenwriter Drew Karpishin talks about BioWare’s corporate identity – review

Drew Karpyshyn recently became part of Archetype entertainment – new studio Wizards of the coast, owners of Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.
And now in his blog, he compared his new and old jobs.

According to the screenwriter Mass effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Archetype now reminds him of the old BioWare, where “magic” hovered in the air, and everything around was felt fresh and exciting.

Then talented people together created epic games like Baldur’s Gate, Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. However, something has changed with growth and success. We have become more corporate.

According to Karpishin, the developers made games primarily on the basis of market analytics, rather than their own creative instincts and passion.

My dream job has become a regular job. I lost the enthusiasm and excitement that was before.

However, Karpishin once again awakened his previous enthusiasm as the leading Archetype screenwriter, especially since the studio was founded by former BioWare veterans: James Olen, Chad Robertson and Jesse Sky.

I know that we have a huge bar. With BioWare, I was part of a legacy that will remain forever. We have created some of the most revered role-playing games of the last two decades.

I truly believe that we at Archetype have a team and the ability to do something just as amazing.

Archetype’s debut project will be a sci-fi role-playing game. This is where the famous details end.

Drew Karpyshyn worked at BioWare twice:

  • from 2000 to 2012 over Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 (partially), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: The Old Republic
  • from 2015 to 2018 over add-ons for Star Wars: The Old Republic and helping with Anthem.
