GTA V and Switch Lite flashed in January – summed up sales of games and consoles in the UK for the first month of 2023

Portal GamesIndustry.biz in collaboration with ISFE and GSD organizations on a monthly basis will now offer a detailed analysis of the British market for the sale of games (physical and digital versions), hardware and accessories.

According to the report, the best-selling game of the first month of 2023 in the United Kingdom was a criminal action movie Grand theft auto v. The hit from Rockstar Games, which was released back in September 2013, was sold in January in a larger circulation than in the same month a year earlier.

In total, 2.13 million monitored retail and digital games were sold in the UK during January (a list of companies providing data will be published at the end of the note). Compared to last year, the decline was 8.3%.

First of all, this drop is associated with a decrease in the number of boxed versions of games sold (-21% compared to the same month of the previous year). This year, January turned out to be very quiet, since the largest release was the role-playing action. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. There were two significant releases in 2019: Survival Horror Resident evil 2 from Capcom and platformer New Super Mario Bros. U deluxe from Nintendo.

Despite the absence of major releases, in January 2023 the number of downloads from digital stores increased (+ 3.7%). The proportion of digital versions of games of the total number of copies sold amounted to 57%.

Despite overall leadership GTA V, the best physical release of the month was a shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare from Activision Publishing. The current January charts can be found below.

The largest publisher of the first month of this year was the company Electronic arts. Largely thanks FIFA 20, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars Battlefront II and EA Sports UFC 3 its share of the total number of games sold was 15%. However, the Nintendo exclusive games are not currently presented on the digital sales chart, and if you consider only the boxed versions, then the Japanese platform holder was unstoppable with an impressive 21% market share. If we take only the “number”, then the leadership remained with the French publisher Ubisoft (Rainbow Six: Siege, Uno and Monopoly plus)

On the Ps4 accounted for most of the games sold (42.7%)followed by Xbox One (26.1%) and Nintendo Switch (16.3%). Again, it’s worth considering the lack of digital sales data for exclusive games on Nintendo consoles. If you take only the boxed version of the games, the leadership is still at the console PS4 (37%)followed by Switch (31%) and Xbox One (24.4%). In the case of the Microsoft gaming platform, data on the Xbox Game Pass subscription service is not taken into account.

Console sales in January of this year could not please platform holders – the number of game consoles sold dipped by 42% compared to the same period in 2019. The main factor behind the slowdown in sales is the upcoming release of next-generation consoles – the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

In terms of revenue and the number of units sold, the most successful gaming device of the last month was the console family Nintendo switch. More precisely, then in January leaders on “Foggy Albion“escaped Lite version. And this happened taking into account the acute shortage of stocks of Nintendo consoles in the country.

The overall drop in iron sales has invariably influenced the accessory and payment card market. For the purchase of 1.18 million units of goods in this category (-19% compared to the same period in 2019), gamers spent in January more than $ 39 million (-13.7% compared to the same period in 2019). The most popular products in the segment were Xbox Live and PlayStation Plus subscriptions, PlayStation Store loans, and the Xbox One wireless controller.
