“It’s just incredible, we don’t do that in Japan”: Yakuza’s father Toshihiro Nagoshi was delighted with Ghost of Tsushima

The release of a samurai action movie took place recently Ghost of tsushimacreated by the team Sucker Punch Productions… The project was warmly received by both the specialized press and ordinary users, and at the same time has already managed to set impressive sales records

Curiously, at launch, the game faced somewhat atypical criticism – “Ghost“scolded some in the Western gaming community, accusing the developers of portraying traditional Japanese culture in an inappropriate way, highlighting the wrong things and arguing that projects about Asia should be created exclusively by Asian teams.

But the position of the Japanese themselves on this issue turned out to be completely opposite – to the inhabitants of the Land of the Rising Sun Ghost of tsushima I liked it very much, the project is actively bought up in all stores in the country, and the issues of the correct representation of the cultural flavor are either not raised at all, or, on the contrary, are surrounded by mostly positive reviews.

One of the industry figures who Ghost of tsushima I sincerely pleased with the presentation of Japan, its history, culture and life in a game format, turned out Toshihiro Nagoshi – company veteran SEGA and the man often referred to as the father of the crime fighter series Yakuza… As part of a monthly podcast SegaNama Nagoshianswering a fan’s question, he admitted that he was extremely pleased with the fact that the western studio was able to convey the spirit of his country so subtly in his work of art

He named exclusive PS4 unique and stated that the Japanese did not create anything of the kind.

We definitely lost to them… Such a game must be created by the Japanese themselves. On the other hand, I know that Sucker Punch has spent a huge amount of effort to collect all the necessary information for its development. We must not forget about the visual mode, inspired by the films of Akira Kurosawa, thanks to which the developers managed to convey the artistic techniques familiar from his tapes. It is such works, created by non-Japanese people, that make you think that there is more Japanese in them than in ourselves.… It’s just incredible. There is an opinion that people in the West cannot understand certain peculiarities of our country, but this game is clear evidence of how wrong such views are, “Toshihiro Nagoshi said.

Separately, Nagoshi singled out the main character of the adventure, Jina Sakaya, a character with the most ordinary and not very distinctive appearance. Veteran SEGA glad the authors from Sucker punch stayed true to the setting and tried to portray such a lively and authentic image

“I am sure that if the concept art with this character were shown in some Japanese studio, it would be immediately sent to the trash heap,” Nagoshi jokingly pointed out, pointing out the Japanese developers’ habit of creating “idealized visuals.”

For sale Ghost of tsushima entered July 17th just on Playstation 4… Our detailed review can be read here
