Great laptop with great design: HP OMEN 15 2023 review

In early September, we introduced you to the line of gaming laptops HP OMEN 2019 on processors Intel Core 9th generation. Today we are on the test 2020 HP OMEN 15based on the processor AMD Ryzen 7 4000-series combined with discrete graphics from NVIDIA… In addition, the laptop uses the new OMEN Tempest Cooling system, which itself HP calls it revolutionary. The official price in Russia for our configuration (15-en0041ur) is 109,990 rubles

PACKAGING AND DELIVERY

A retail model of the device came to us for testing, which is packed in a white box made of thick cardboard. On the front of the box is a huge diamond-shaped logo in a yellow-pink gradient with OMEN wordmark inside. On one of the edges there is a sticker with exact information about the characteristics of the model in Russian with some clarifications.

The box opens from the side like a casket, and inside you will find the HP OMEN 15 in a recess, packed in a transparent bag with a pull-tab that allows you to easily pull the laptop out of the box. The device will also have a transparent envelope containing instructions for setting up in Russian, Ukrainian and Kazakh languages, a booklet about the service life and a simplified declaration of conformity. To the right of the laptop recess there is a small compartment where the power supply and power cable are waiting for you.

APPEARANCE

Unlike the 2019 models, the OMEN of the 20 th year, although it remains a gaming solution, but its design has become much more monolithic and stricter. The designers of the HP gaming division took the path of minimalism and did not load the new OMEN’s with unnecessary textures. The design uses chopped edges that are rounded in some places and have sharp corners in others. This combination brings some originality to the design, and the dark gray aluminum body only reinforces this effect.

A special place in the design of the new OMEN is given to the logo on the lid. It acts as the cherry on top here, drawing all the attention at the first glance at the laptop. The mirrored texture, made in a violet-green chameleon shade, stands out very strongly and looks unusual. The surface of the logo is easily soiled, so do not touch it with your fingers. However, the rest of the body is touch-resistant – only marks remain if you have greasy or sweaty hands.

OMEN lettering is neatly engraved under the mirrored logo.

Half of the bottom of the laptop is occupied by a huge grill, behind which you can see the cooling system and two symmetrically located fans that collect air from the bottom and blow it out through the holes on the right side and back.

The grille along the entire rear edge of the device resembles the headlights of the Quadra V-tech car from the video game Cyberpunk 2077. There is no backlight, but a long radiator is clearly visible along the perimeter of the grill.

The laptop is 25 mm thick, 35.7 cm long, and 23.8 cm wide. The weight of the device is 2.47 kg, which is quite standard for a gaming laptop with a 15-inch screen. Despite its size, a 200-watt power supply is not heavy for its class. Together with the network cable, it weighs 0.64 kg.

HP also did not disappoint with connectors, and there is simply a huge selection of them.

On the left side you will find not only a connector for charging from a 200-watt power supply, but also an RJ-45 connector for connecting a wired Internet, an HDMI 2.0a output for displaying images on TVs or monitors, a USB 3.2 Type-A connector, a combined 3.5 input mm for connecting a headset, as well as a slot for reading SD memory cards. On the right, there are two more USB 3.2 Type-A connectors, a Mini DisplayPort output for connecting monitors and projectors, as well as one USB 3.2 Type-C that supports DisplayPort 1.4 mode. All USBs, including Type-C, support HP Sleep and Charge technology, which allows you to charge external devices while your laptop is in sleep or hibernation mode.

The lid of the laptop can be easily opened with one hand and a maximum of 180 degrees. The bezels of the laptop are quite thin. The side ones are only 7 mm each, 10 mm from the top, and the largest one – 32 mm from the bottom. The frame is made of plastic. OMEN lettering flaunts in the middle on the lower part. Above the screen, a 1 megapixel camera is built in for video calls, for example, via ZOOM. Face login using Windows Hello is not supported by this camera.

SCREEN

The screen in this 15.6-inch laptop is from the Chinese giant Nanjing Panda Electronics. A 6-bit IPS panel with 60Hz Full HD resolution delivers decent and smooth picture quality for both single AAA projects and competitive online games. There are no complaints about viewing angles at all. NTSC color gamut is about 45%, and sRGB is ~ 54%. Brightness – 250 nits. The surface of the screen is matte, there is an anti-reflective coating. On black, this matrix has microscopic highlights, so you can hardly notice them in dark scenes in games or movies.

SOUND, FILLING AND FUNCTIONALITY

As with all HP solutions, the speaker setup for this notebook was handled by experts from the Danish premium manufacturer Bang & Olufsen. Two speakers are located on the side faces. Their volume level is quite standard. The highs and mids sound clear when listening to music, but the lows are slightly flatter. For games, these speakers are more than enough. Your computer is pre-installed with the proprietary OMEN Audio Control application, which provides control of incoming and outgoing sound sources, microphone noise reduction and an equalizer with ready-made presets. The built-in speakers also have DTS: X Ultra support.

Most of the base is occupied by the keyboard unit, which is located on the recessed part. The keyboard is made of soft-touch plastic, the travel is comfortable and quiet during use, it has 4-zone backlighting (right, middle, left, WASD zones), which can be easily turned off by pressing FN + F4. The setting is carried out using the proprietary Omen Gaming Hub application, which can also be quickly accessed using the FN + OMEN combination (diamond key). There is no digital block, but there are navigation buttons and arrows placed in a separate block.

The touchpad is located in front of the keyboard on a raised part of the base, made flush with the keyboard buttons. It should be noted that when closed, there is a 3-mm gap between the base and the lid on three sides due to the recessed part with the keyboard. The touch panel is quite large here, and the working surface is 115 x 64 mm. The surface of the touchpad is made of soft-touch plastic and supports multi-finger gesture control. The bottom corners are pressed through and mimic the main mouse buttons.

The aforementioned Omen Gaming Hub app allows you to not only control the keyboard backlighting, but also manipulate your entire library of games, customize the RGB lighting of other OMEN-branded connected devices, as well as set system performance and play remotely on this device using another PC or device based on Android or iOS.

BATTERY, OPERATION AND TESTS

This notebook comes with a 6-cell Li-ion polymer battery with a capacity of approximately 71,000 mWh. A full charge will last for 4-5 hours of normal use: surfing the Internet, working with documents, watching videos and listening to music. In gaming mode, with a significant loss in performance, the laptop will last about 1.5 hours. The system operates at maximum performance only when the power is connected.

In the Omen Gaming Hub app, you can control performance by choosing one of the three available profiles:

  • By default, the laptop independently manages the performance and operation of the cooling system.
  • Comfortable – Designed for everyday tasks with reduced performance and temperature.
  • Performance – for gaming, which improves the performance and efficiency of the cooling system.

You can also select the fan speed between automatic, at which the system itself regulates the rotation speed, and maximum, where the fans rotate at their maximum speed.

The computer is based on the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H processor, clocked at 2.9 GHz. The processor is 8-core and operates in 16 threads, and the maximum frequency is 4200 GHz.

The laptop has 2 DDR4 memory sticks of 8 gigabytes each (operating at 1600 MHz) with a maximum frequency of 3200 MHz from SK hynix. The memory can be independently expanded up to 32 gigabytes.

The internal storage is a 512 gigabyte NVMe SSD from Western Digital. It is also possible to install a second drive in a free M.2 slot.

There are two video adapters in the laptop: the AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 accelerator built into the CPU with 512 MB of video memory, which is used when the laptop is not under load, and a discrete NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 card with 6 GB of GDDR6 memory.

In standard mode (default) AIDA64 displays the following temperatures:

  • CPU – 34 ° C
  • NVIDIA RTX 2060 – 35 ° C
  • WDC PC SN730 SDBPNTY-512G-1006 – 36 ° C

Under maximum load in benchmarks, the laptop’s CPU heats up to 90 degrees, which is quite normal. The maximum temperature of the GPU we were able to fix at around 81 degrees. The OMEN Tempest Cooling system has done an excellent job and no throttling has been noticed in a few hours of testing this notebook.

CrystalDisk Info tests indicate an average solid state drive temperature of 44 ° C. The disk speed in Crystal Disk Mark was 2884 MB / s for reading and 2713 MB / s for writing. The AS SDD test, as usual, shows faster speed results – 2330 MB / s for reading and 1903 MB / s for writing.

In graphics tests, the NVIDIA RTX 2060 performs very well. All tests were conducted in Full HD resolution in system performance mode with power on:

  • In the Superposition benchmark test on the Unigine 2 engine at high settings, the system showed from 55 to 82 frames.
  • In the Boundary ray tracing test with DLSS enabled in ultra performance mode, the laptop was able to achieve an average frame rate of 91 FPS.
  • In the Final Fantasy XV benchmark test, the laptop achieved 5939 points and a Fairly High score at high graphics settings.
  • The system has also been tested in Gears 5 Ultra and Forza Horizon 4 in-game tests at maximum custom settings. In both cases, frame rate lock was disabled. In the shooter from Coalition, the average frame rate was almost 71 FPS, while in the popular open world race it was 78 frames per second.
  • Next, we tested the computer in one of the most undemanding shooters on the Vulcan API – DOOM Eternal. In dynamic scenes at ultra settings, we managed to fix the average in the region of 100-120 frames per second.
  • The last one we tested was last year’s Control, which tested performance in RTX and DLSS mode at 540p rendering resolution. The shooter from Remedy averaged 60-65 FPS, which is more than an excellent result for this demanding game.

In general, the hardware of this laptop may well be enough for games at high settings in Full HD.

As for the noise indicators, the laptop is not audible at all in normal mode at a room noise level of 30-35 dB. Under heavy loads, powerful cooling starts to work, and the device becomes noisy, but the case does not heat up much. The average noise level under load is 45 db, which is quite quiet compared to other gaming solutions with similar configurations.

RESULTS

HP OMEN 15 2023 Is a great laptop that not only combines good performance for Full HD gaming, but also a beautiful understated design. Thanks to its more minimalistic appearance, the device stands out against the background of other gaming models on the market, and a fairly quiet and powerful cooling system shows itself well in practice. The built-in software allows you to customize your laptop in a couple of clicks, and the speakers are enough for games and watching movies on the go.
