Far Cry 4 creator: Backward compatible on Xbox Series X and PS5 will give developers extra workload

February is still on the calendar, but hype around the upcoming next-generation consoles Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 every day only intensifies. Against the background of the lack of more detailed information about consoles (especially from Sony, which has not even demonstrated its PS5 console yet), there are more and more rumors. One of the most popular topics for discussion in gaming communities has been backward compatibility support.

Sony previously acknowledged that the PlayStation 5 will be backward compatible with games for the PlayStation 4, while Microsoft is determined to offer its next generation console support for the large number of projects available on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and even the original Xbox.

Creative Director and Co-Founder, Typhoon Studios Alex Hutchinson (Assassin’s Creed III, Far Cry 4) recently released a cooperative adventure game Journey to the Savage Planetis not very positive about backward compatibility. He spoke about this in an interview.

“It seems that Sony and Microsoft began to think about more frequent release of updated gaming devices, as, for example, happens with smartphones, and therefore they just want to make sure that the base of games remains up-to-date, otherwise developers will face terrible trials … But in fact, it simply means that we will have to work even harder to support more platforms. All this kills the very best in consoles: a reliable box with a long life. “

Instead of creating a new project or content, developers will have to spend time and resources to provide support for additional platforms for existing games, said an ex-Ubisoft employee. In this regard, the benefits of working on consoles over PCs are beginning to blur.

Hutchinson was also asked whether, in his opinion, Sony’s touted tactile feedback from the future PS5 console controller would be a very important or innovative solution. In response, he said that for him this was an innovation at the level of analog buttons from the past and racing wheels.

Console Release PS5 and Xbox Series X expected before the end of this year. Journey to the Savage Planet Currently available for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Hutchinson Studio has recently become part of Google – it will create exclusives for the cloud platform Google stadia.
