“What Beasts”: The latest Cyberpunk 2077 news sparked outrage in the LGBT community

Polish studio CD Projekt RED repeatedly accused of homophobia and transphobia during development Cyberpunk 2077, and in response she only promised to take into account the most diverse wishes of the audience. For example, representatives of the LGBT community and their supporters did not like the words “man” and “woman” in the character editor. The developers took this into account and abandoned this separation. Moreover, they allowed to combine the typical “male” and “female” parts of the body as desired, so that everyone could create a protagonist of their dreams.

But there was another problem, and it concerned the pronouns. The fact is that there are people who ask them to be treated, for example, as “they” or “it” – the options “he” or “she” are not enough, and journalists asked CD Projekt RED many questions on this subject. In 2019, the studio promised that players will have the opportunity to create a full-fledged gender fluid character, but in the latest demo, browsers didn’t find a hint. Relevant publications caused a new wave of indignation.

In particular, journalists found that in the demo version of the main pronouns there are only two – “he” and “she”, and they are not even determined by the type of body, but … by the tone of voice. Suppose if a hero who looks like an “absolute man” is cast a high voice, the characters in the game will automatically refer to him as a woman — she, her, her, and so on. Accordingly, if the voice is low, any person created in the editor will become a man for the inhabitants of the world of Cyberpunk 2077 – regardless of how he looks.

Kotaku adds that in the game you cannot, for example, create a “feminine character” with a high voice, who would be treated like a man. The Gamer called this approach a “real nightmare for transgender people.”

The players write that the developers should have worked better on this aspect and let each buyer choose the pronouns in isolation from the voice and body structure, as they promise to do in Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2.

“Voice = gender? What kind of insanity is this? And what to do with non-binary people?”

“What kind of creatures … However, I have not expected anything from this shit studio for a long time.”

“I don’t even know what to say. This is the worst option of all.”

“They added different types of genitals and nipples to the game, but were too lazy to make a tab with pronouns? What ???”.

“Terribly disappointed in Cyberpunk 2077. But transfoby will be happy.”

“Do they even understand what equality and diversity are? I’m not going to support such games.”

Advocates of CD Projekt RED note that the studio could refuse to introduce a large number of different pronouns into the game due to financial issues and the need to make many different versions of the voice acting. Some also hope that this is just a demo was so limited, and in the final version there will be more options. The developers have not yet commented on the situation.

Cyberpunk 2077 is coming out November 19, 2023.
