Rocket League won’t get 120 FPS on PlayStation 5 due to backward compatibility

Studio Psyonix recently announced that in the coming weeks for Rocket league there will be an update for the new generation, but not on all platforms. While on Xbox series x and Xbox series s the game will receive an additional mode with 120 FPS, a version for Playstation 5 will work in the only available option with “chess” 4K at 60 FPS, that is, the same as on the PS4 Pro.

In a comment for the Push Square portal, the developers explained why the game will be left without 120 FPS on PS5. It turns out that it’s all about the features of backward compatibility on the new Sony console… If on Xbox Series X / S a simple patch is enough to add an increased frame rate, then the only way to achieve the same on PlayStation 5 is by creating a full-fledged port, and since the studio was busy transferring the game to Free-2-Play, they had to prioritize.

This is not the first time a PS5 game has ever happened. Previously creators of an action game about a man-eating shark Maneater reported that the project does not support transferring saves between two generations of PlayStation, since on Sony consoles they are, in fact, two different applications, unlike Xbox, and Star Wars: Squadrons and Call of Duty: Warzone also left without 120 FPS mode on PS5, but at the same time got it on Series X / S. Apparently, the reason is the same in both cases.
