This Is Not The Way: George Lucas Criticizes Disney’s Star Wars

Producer George Lucas admitted that the franchise “star Wars“(Star Wars) under control Disney is developing in a completely different way, as he would like. The filmmaker spoke about this during a conversation with schoolchildren from East Harlem.

The dialogue took place back in October 2023, but fans paid attention to it only in March 2023. Later, the school decided to hide the video, but the Internet remembers everything (watch from the 42nd minute).

One of the seventh grade students asked Lucas if “changes in the struggle for racial justice” will affect the Star Wars universe in the future. In response, the director stated that he had lost control of the franchise.

“I don’t know … I lost control of Star Wars, so things are not going the way I planned,” Lucas explained.

The director considers his six episodes to be films of all time. The prequel trilogy shows how a democracy can turn into a dictatorship and a popular leader into a tyrant.

Lucas emphasized that there is no real discrimination in his version of the Star Wars universe, as aliens of a wide variety of shapes and colors coexist in it. Only the droids suffer from the infringement of their rights.

“We have not yet reached this period, I am sure that robots will be able to overcome prejudices, because they do not have the same feelings,” he said.

The most interesting moment in the interview is to recognize the reaction of the wife of George Lucas – the head of Starbucks Mellody Hobson… When the conversation turned to Star Wars, the woman stopped smiling. She cast anxious glances at her husband with an expression of bitterness on her face.

It has long been known that the director was not enthusiastic about the new Disney course. When the movie came out “Force awakens“(The force awakens), Lucas compared Mickey Mouse House with the “white slave owners” and indicated that the work J.J. Abrams looks too much like a retelling “New hope“(A new hope).

Apparently, Disney’s management had an “educational conversation” with the director. Therefore, in principle, he stopped giving detailed interviews and appearing at film premieres.

As for “losing control”, this is not a secret either. George Lucas sold the studio Lucasfilm and the rights to Star Wars in 2012. Disney overpaid for the asset, and the director became one of the company’s largest shareholders.

But Lucas wanted to maintain influence over the franchise, for which a personnel maneuver was organized. He put in charge of Lucasfilm my good friend – a former assistant Steven Spielberg, co-founder Amblin Entertainment and the most powerful woman in Hollywood Kathleen Kennedy… Disney President Bob Iger did not dispute the appointment, but he personally supervised the production of the seventh episode.

Lucas offered his work for the new trilogy, but Kennedy sided Mickey Mouse housesand the director’s script went to the trash can. As Iger later admitted, the creator of Star Wars was deeply upset that his ideas were rejected.

“George felt betrayed,” ex-Disney CEO wrote in his memoir The Ride of a Lifetime

Under Kathleen Kennedy’s leadership, Lucasfilm has failed the challenge of turning the franchise into a stable cash-generating pipeline. With the consent of the studio management, the director Ryan Johnson and the script team members ignored the presets J.J. Abrams, completely breaking the concept of the trilogy. The main failure was a movie that hit the production hell “Han Solo. Star Wars Tales“(Solo: A Star Wars Story), which was unable to recapture its budget.

In the past few years, the ex-head of Lucasfilm has shown interest in only one project in the Star Wars universe. It’s about the series “Mandalorian“(The mandalorian), for which are responsible Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. The latter worked under the guidance of Lucas, launching the animated series “Clone wars“(The clone wars), which continues to evolve under Disney, while Favreau voiced one of the characters.
