The Last of Us 3 – Neil Drackmann shared his thoughts on the continuation of the series

The Last of Us: Part II came out just the other day, but as is the case with many other major series, players are already brewing questions about what will happen next. Given the strong critical reception of the sequel in the press and the excellent start to sales, Sony will probably only be in favor if Naughty dog in the future he intends to make another part of “One of Us”, however, with regard to the opinion on this subject itself Neela Drackmann, for him the main question is whether they can come up with an interesting story to continue.

In a recent interview with the publication Indie wirewhen asked about potential The Last of Us: Part III, Drackmann explained that another continuation would have to pass the same test that the second part had passed in due time: would Naughty Dog be able to find new and interesting ways of presenting the story, and not go along the already traveled path.

“I will be expectedly vague and evasive, but I think the test for whether to create Part III should be similar to what we did with Part II. There were no expectations with the first game, and we could do anything, but when we had already formed certain characters, themes and mechanisms, it seemed to me that to justify the appearance of Part II, we had to do not just something that would be comfortable for the fans, but something that would correspond the emotional core that we found in the first game. And without that, it makes no sense to take on Part III. “

“With the sequel, finding the right ideas was already a lot harder than the first part, and it would be exponentially harder to justify returning to that world and finding a way to diversify it. You’ve already seen a lot of things, including the background about how the outbreak occurred so we need to figure out how to create a new experience that will emotionally fit past stories, and so far I don’t know how to do it. “

Without delving into the spoilers, we note that in The Last of Us: Part II there really are several narrative themes that seem to open the door for a new story, but the game in no way screams about the continuation, as was the case with the original .

Drackmann, however, does not exclude the possibility that his next project could be a completely new IP.
