Sony’s Right Approach: All New PS4 Games Must Support PlayStation 5

Company Sony Interactive Entertainment notified the developers that any new games sent for certification after July 13, must be compatible with Playstation 5.

Information on this is contained in the internal documentation available to Sony partners. Eurogamer. According to a journalist report, at the end of April, Sony added a clause in PS4 devkit software that indicates that game developers should now check their performance with the PlayStation 5. At the same time, Sony is going to individually contact the studios and explain to them the details of compatibility testing.

In another part of the document, it is explained that the game is considered compatible with the PS5 if it works flawlessly and provides the same set of features as on the PS4. So, for example, the developer could not mark his game as compatible with a non-gen-set-top box without providing support for a certain operating mode.

The developer note also details Sony’s policy regarding patches for existing games and re-releases previously released. If the game was sent for certification before July 13, then all new patches for it and reprints do not have to have PS5 support, although this is “highly recommended”. For all other games submitted to the platform holder after the indicated date, any future update or reissue should already take into account PlayStation 5 support.

Eurogamer also heard that Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us: Part II will also receive PlayStation 5 support.although both will be certified before July 13th.

In March, Sony announced that the vast majority of over four thousand PlayStation 4 games would play on PlayStation 5. At that time, the company had already tested hundreds of games and was preparing to test thousands more, noting that it evaluates games on a “title by title” basis, so that identify any problems that require adjustment by the developers of the original software.

Apparently, Sony will conduct an internal backward compatibility check for all games submitted for certification before July 13, however, the responsibility for ensuring compatibility with the PlayStation 5 for PS4 titles submitted after this date will fall on the shoulders of the developers themselves, otherwise their games simply will not be allowed to release.
