RKN threatened Twitter and Facebook with fines for non-compliance

According to media reports, Roskomnadzor is going to fine Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Google for failure to comply with the service requirement.

The named sites did not confirm the localization of the databases of Russians on the territory of the Russian Federation – Roskomnadzor requested these data, but they were not provided on time. Therefore, with respect to corporations, administrative protocols will be drawn up, threatening with fines of varying degrees.

In the case of WhatsApp and Google, the amount can reach 6 million rubles, and for Facebook and Twitter – 18 million rubles, since the latter have this repeated violation. Last time they were fined for refusal in February 2023 – Facebook paid off the debt, while representatives of Twitter continue to appeal the decision. Prior to that, firms received fines in 2019 as well.

RKN demanded that various firms provide such data before the end of May, they were reported by Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, PayPal, Booking, LG and so on. In total, more than 600 foreign companies complied with the requirement.
