One of the best smartphones in its price segment: OPPO A52 review

To the editorial board of the portal GameMAG.ru a mid-budget smartphone from the company came to the test OPPOA52… The official price of the device in Russia is 17 990 rubles

DELIVERY AND PACKAGING

We have received a retail sample of the device. OPPO A52 is distributed in a wide rectangular white cardboard box with images of the smartphone on the front and back, model name, logo and information on the amount of RAM and internal memory. The package includes a 20 watt power adapter, a USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable, a silicone case, a clip for removing the SIM tray, and a manual. A protective film has already been applied to the screen of the device.

EXTERNAL DATA AND CONNECTORS

In Russia, the smartphone is presented in two colors – white and black. We had a white sample on our test, which is actually a gradient coloring – from top to bottom it goes from white to a light turquoise shade. The back cover is made of glossy plastic and the frame is matte. It looks very nice and fashionable. The front panel of OPPO A52 is covered with Gorilla Glass 3. Thanks to the oleophobic coating, fingerprints are barely visible on the phone.

The size of the device is 162×75.5×8.9 mm. Weight – 192 grams. Screen – LTPS-matrix with a diagonal of 6.5 inches and a resolution of 2400×1080 pixels, aspect ratio – 20: 9, covers approximately 83.4% of the front side of the smartphone. The refresh rate is 60 Hz. The pixel density is 405 ppi.

At the bottom of the screen is a 5 mm chin. A front-facing camera is embedded in the upper left corner, which is able to unlock the phone in the face. It works with a slight delay. Above the display is the speaker, which is also used to play multimedia content and create stereo sound. Also, a light sensor is hidden under the screen on top.

On the back there is a rectangular wide block of four camera modules and an LED flash, as well as the OPPO logo. Due to the camera block, the phone is slightly raised and uneven on a hard surface, but the situation improves if you use the complete silicone case, thanks to which the module becomes almost flush with the surface of the case.

On the right side there is a power button, where a fingerprint scanner is also built in, which works quite quickly and clearly. Separate volume buttons are located on the left edge. There is also a slot for SIM-cards with a large tray, in which you can install two nano-SIM and micro SD with support for up to 256 GB. There is nothing on the top rib. On the bottom, you will find a multimedia speaker hole, a microphone, a USB Type-C connector for charging and data transfer, and a 3.5 mm headphone port.

USE AND CONVENIENCE

The smartphone is slightly heavy and thick, but the reason for this is the large battery, however, the grip is quite comfortable – it does not cut the hand due to the rounded edges. The average Caucasian thumb reaches up to about 75% of the screen. The brightness is 480 nits, the contrast is 1500: 1. The matrix does not support HDR content output. PWM is completely absent.

Watching movies, TV shows and anime on the road on OPPO A52 is quite comfortable, and the embedded camera does not interfere with enjoying content in a 16: 9 ratio at all, since it is outside the image. When reading manga on sites and articles on GameMAG, there were no complaints either. It is very convenient to type with your thumbs using the keyboard of the proprietary shell of the device.

Questions arose about the accelerometer in the smartphone, since the auto-rotate of the screen is triggered with a delay of ~ 1.5-2 seconds.

SOUND

The speaker on the bottom edge of the smartphone, as well as the earpiece speaker, are responsible for playing multimedia content. The device supports Hi-Res Audio and Dirac 2.0 technology, which adapts the sound to the content being played. The sound is clear and loud, and is quite suitable not only for watching movies or TV shows on a long journey, but also for small videos on YouTube during breaks during work. Pure audio lovers who have ditched wires will be glad to hear that the phone has received support for the APTX HD codec.

CAMERA AND TESTS

The rectangular box on the back is equipped with four modules. The main camera has a resolution of 12 megapixels (4000×3000) for photography and 8.3 megapixels (3840×2160) for video. Focal length – 4.05 mm, aperture – f / 1.8. The second module is an ultra-wide 8 megapixel with an aperture of f / 2.2 and a coverage angle of 119 degrees. There are also two 2-megapixel cameras with f / 2.4 aperture for portrait photography.

The main module does an excellent job in daylight outdoors and demonstrates good performance in terms of image details, but in dim lighting, photos begin to be covered with noticeable noise.

Night mode does a good job and shows more detail than the automatic mode, but a little shaking of the hands results in very blurry photos, especially if you are shooting subjects with a lot of detail, such as tree foliage.

The ultra-wide module shoots mediocre and suffers from blurring of the picture in low light. The phone performed very well in portrait mode and macro mode, and this is one of his best achievements.

As for video, the main camera is capable of recording videos at a maximum resolution of 4K at 30 frames per second, as well as in Full HD at 30, 60 and 120 frames. The camera uses gyro stabilization to reduce shake while shooting.

When you switch the front camera, a blue iridescent outline appears around the embedded camera for a second, signaling that it will be used now. It also glows when the phone is unlocked by face.

The front camera in the Russian version of the device is equipped with an 8 megapixel module, as in the version for the Chinese market, while the western version has a 16 megapixel module. As for the quality of the shooting, then the portrait shots are very good and are well suited for posting to Instagram. The camera is also capable of recording video in 720p and 1080p resolution at 30FPS.

BATTERY, IRON & COMMUNICATIONS

The smartphone comes with a 5000 mAh non-removable Li-Pol battery. The phone supports 18W fast charging. Thanks to it, you can charge your phone 50% in 1 hour and 10 minutes, up to 75% in 1 hour and 47 minutes, and completely in 3 hours and 5 minutes. Unfortunately, this device does not have wireless charging technology either.

With everyday use of a smartphone (calls, instant messengers, watching several videos a day on YouTube and listening to music in a Bluetooth headset), the smartphone lasts for 2-2.5 days.

OPPO A52 runs Android 10 with OPPO’s proprietary ColorOS version 7.1 shell. The core of the system is last year’s 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset (11nm, 4 Kryo 260 Gold cores with an operating frequency of 2 GHz, 4 Kryo 260 Silver cores with an operating frequency of 1.8 GHz), which works in conjunction with the Adreno 610 graphics accelerator and 4 GB of operational memory.

The built-in memory in the device is 64 GB (UFS 2.1 standard) – for those who like to store videos and photos, this is not so much, however, as noted above, there is also a microSD slot – cards up to 256 gigabytes are supported. The slot is located in the same tray as two nano-SIM, but it should be noted that simultaneously with the expansion of memory, you can put two SIM cards at once.

OPPO A52 is equipped with Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and Wi-Fi 5 modules supporting 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. Navigation systems: aGPS, GPS and GLONASS, Beidou and GALILEO.

SYNTHETIC TESTS AND GAMES

Based on basic tests AnTuTu and 3D Mark identified the phone as OPPO A52 or CPH2069. In AnTuTu, the smartphone scores almost 179504 points and is ranked 80th in the ranking of Android solutions.

As for games, we managed to test this device in such projects as PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile, Asphalt 9 and C.A.T.S. Over the course of several hours, we noticed small drawdowns in Asphalt 9, but this is standard for such a heavy application. The rest of the games ran smoothly and did not cause discomfort.

In normal operation, the processor temperature did not exceed 45 degrees, and the battery stayed around 34. With PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9 running, the processor temperature reached 63 degrees, and the battery warmed up to 39.

RESULTS

OPPO A52 is a good smartphone for those looking for a device with a large battery and not chasing performance. And it has Google services. Iron A52 is enough for all everyday tasks, and the ability to listen to music in high quality and with stereo sound can be called a pleasant bonus. For the money, this is perhaps the best multi-harvester available on the market.
