More focus on F2P and support for released games: Ubisoft reduces dependence on AAA titles

French publishing house Ubisoft plans to gradually reduce reliance on AAA game releases, focusing instead on shareware titles and back catalog.

Following the release of quarterly results, Ubisoft announced that it will release three AAA-level games in the next fiscal year (April 2023 to March 2023), however, in the future, the company does not want to center its business model exclusively on high-budget titles.

“For several years we have been saying that our typical pattern is three or four AAA games, so we will continue to stick with that plan for FY2022. But we are seeing that we are gradually and steadily moving away from the model that was previously focused on just by releasing AAA titles, to a model in which we have a combination of strong AAA releases and strong back catalog dynamics, complementing our program with new shareware releases and other benefits, “said Ubisoft CFO Frederic Dughet.

Then he recalled the already announced future games, including Far Cry 6, Rainbow Six: Quarantine, Skull & Bones, Riders Republic, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake and Roller Champions. The company is also preparing a new mobile Assassin’s creed for China to be released with Tencent… Now the share of the mobile segment is about 9% of the total business of Ubisoft.

It is noteworthy that during the conference call not a single mention was made of a free battle royale Hyper scape, which badly failed at launch and is currently undergoing a major overhaul.

CEO Yves Guillemot noted that the company’s back catalog (projects that have already been released, but continue to generate revenue in the long term) will also play a more significant role in the future. For example, to Rainbow six: siege, which is already six years old, has increased over the past 12 months 15 million new players, and since launch, the total player base has grown to 70 million… It is still one of the main sources of income for the publisher.
