Microsoft’s generosity: Phil Spencer’s team encouraged publishers to upgrade games from Xbox One to Xbox Series X for free

If the user Xbox one bought a game that also goes on Xbox Series X, he should have the opportunity to upgrade for free to the non-xstgen version of the product for which he has already paid money. So says the corporation Microsoft, which is now actively trying to convey its point of view to other publishers, the publication reports. Video Games Chronicle with reference to own sources.

Microsoft previously introduced the Xbox Smart Delivery program, which allows players who pay for one version of the game to access the second for free.. All new releases of the Xbox team will fully support this program. Third-party publishers are given the choice – they can either join the initiative or not. Among those who supported Microsoft’s approach, there are authors of major innovations such as DiRT 5, Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s creed valhalla. With many others, the giant continues to negotiate.

Video Games Chronicle sources said that Microsoft strongly opposed the idea of selling upgrades from the old version of the game to the new one in the DLC format for money. If the publisher does not want to support Xbox Smart Delivery, he is strongly advised to come up with its own analogue of the upgrade program with some restrictions, which Electronic Arts and 2K Games have already gone for. However, in this case, you can’t make conservation and achievements common for the two versions of the game – this is the exclusive Xbox Smart Delivery.

Third-party publishers can also take a closer look at other options: for example, selling non-Xtgen versions of games to owners of base versions at a discount or distributing bundles consisting of two separate versions of one game, where the copy for the Xbox One will be physical and for the Xbox Series X digital.

Microsoft emphasizes that its ultimate goal is to please gamers and make their stay in the Xbox ecosystem as convenient as possible.

Earlier it was reported that Sony does not have its own analogue of the Xbox Smart Delivery on the PlayStation 5. It provides each publisher with the right to decide independently whether players can upgrade to non-xtgen versions for free or not. What will happen to the projects of Sony itself is still unknown.

Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will be released in the fall of 2023.
