“I used pans and rakes”: Death Stranding composer talked about creating a soundtrack and a favorite theme

Swedish composer Ludwig Forssellwho wrote music for an atmospheric adventure game Death stranding, spoke about the process of creating a soundtrack and its sources of inspiration as part of an interview for GameMAG.ru.

As it turned out, the heavy and crushing parts of synthesizers in Death stranding were largely inspired by the movie “It“2014 release, as well as other horror tapes that featured a similar approach to making music. However, as the game progresses Hideo Kojima the composer wanted to convey through his music lighter, more hopeful moods, contrasting with the initially gloomy atmosphere. To do this, he used more traditional instruments, as well as an atypical sound library created using ordinary household items..

“From a thematic point of view, synthesizers and [традиционные инструменты] reflect the key ideas of Death Stranding – life and death, as two sides of the same coin. To weave them together, I resorted to household tools, such as pans, rakes and other trash. The “real” sound of these objects helped to give the synthesizers a sort of sense of “tangibility” and at the same time somewhat diluted the other, traditional part of the soundtrack, ”Ludwig Forsell explained.

In an interview with GameMAG.ru, the composer also named his favorite part of the soundtrack Death stranding. And as it turned out, this is “BB theme“, sounding in a trailer dedicated to the launch of the project, as well as directly in one of the game’s climaxes.

“I worked on this piece for a very long time.” Theme BB ”was the first vocal / pop composition that I worked on professionally.

It seems to me that this song is a good reflection of my own style and at the same time it’s great for the game, successfully causing the necessary emotional resonance, ”the composer said in an interview.

Death stranding debuted in November last year only on Playstation 4 (Our review) Tomorrow, the 14 th of July, the PC audience will be able to familiarize themselves with the game.
