Huawei Mate 30 Pro review – testing the flagship smartphone with the top Leica quad camera

To the editors of the portal Gamemag.ru the new flagship of the company hit the test Huawei – Mate 30 Pro. The official price of the gadget in Russia is 69,999 rubles. But it is often subject to promotions and special offers that allow a good save.

The device comes in a pretty black box. The kit includes a branded case made of hard plastic, wire USB Type-C for charging and connecting to a PC, a plug for connecting to an outlet, a clip for opening a SIM card slot and wired headphones. Warranty – 12 months.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro has standard protection IP68, which means complete dust resistance with the ability to work in water at a depth of not more than 1 meter lasting about 30 minutes.

The phone is quite large, but not huge, but you can’t call it thin. Its dimensions are 158 x 73 x 9 mm. Weight – 198 grams. The case is moderately slippery, and the gadget lies comfortably in men’s hands, allowing you to cover two thirds of the screen with your thumb. The weight is still excess for my taste, but in two weeks of active use you get used to it. Build quality is top notch.

Huawei has released several color options: Cosmic Purple, Cosmic Silver, Emerald Green and Black. In Russia, the second usually occurs on sale. The last came to the editorial office. This is a very complex color, which, depending on the lighting, changes its subton, starting from deep black, passing through dark gray to shiny silver, a little fading into blue in bright light. The reflection on the case is complex, but not catchy, which allows the device to look strictly.

Finger stains remain, but they do not stand out much on the dark surface of the gadget, whose screen is covered with an oleophobic coating. Since a camera protrudes above the surface of the case, I still recommend using a case in which the gadget looks more matte.

The red power button is a little knocked out of the concept of a business device, but it is very small, so it is almost invisible.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro

Otherwise, the Mate 30 Pro generally has no buttons or extra elements. The usual volume rocker and the top speaker are gone, the fingerprint sensor is located directly under the glass. It works as quickly as possible, but I still prefer to unlock the device in the face.

Compared with Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus Both unlock options for Huawei Mate 30 Pro are significantly faster.

To increase or decrease the sound level, double-tap the left or right side of the screen. Unlike new Sony XperiaThe Mate 30 Pro easily understands the movement of a finger along the side of the smartphone and calls up the volume slider exactly at the moments when you want it.

The adjustment is accompanied by a very neat and pleasant vibration feedback, which allows you to feel the effect of interaction.

On the one hand, this is an interesting solution that makes the design of the gadget more modern. On the other hand, it’s not possible to quickly change the volume by touch.

The sound of the lower speaker itself is normal. It is quite loud, not bad, but there is no sensation of real volume.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro

A nice screen-waterfall is one of the main selling points of the device. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro has no side frames – instead, the display continues and goes around the edges to the middle of the left and right ends. In accordance with this, the designers changed the model of the cover, which has special cutouts on the sides so that all the functionality and appearance of the “waterfall” are preserved.

It looks very unusual – like a smartphone that came from the future (manufacturers have already begun to make phones almost entirely consisting of a screen). And futurism is strict here – the device looks expensive and premium.

However, one cannot say that the “waterfall” design is always convenient. Some elements of the image during, for example, viewing photos on the Mate 30 Pro, it is sometimes simply difficult to consider when the picture goes beyond the front of the screen. She turns away from you the other way, and to see everything, you have to turn the screen a little.

Twisting OLED90-degree display creates the effect of a strip from a too much changed viewing angle, which makes the picture at the edges darker. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus has a similar problem, but there it is not so pronounced due to the lack of such a strong bend.

Of course, you can enable the restriction of the displayed area for applications, but then the wow effect from the “waterfall” disappears. It is worth noting that in some applications, such as games, the smartphone itself changes the mode so that the side areas do not go too far.

Mate 30 Pro rarely starts to read your actions incorrectly when you touch the edges of the screen with your hands. Due to the designer’s blind spots, the gadget usually understands that you really just hold it with your hands, rather than trying to, say, scroll the page or change the window in an open application.

With a complete lack of side frames, the Mate 30 Pro surprises with the presence of a noticeable “chin” and “bangs”. The first one takes 3 mm from the screen in the glass area and 2 more can be added if you count the area of the metal edging of the case.

The central part of the bangs takes as much as 7 mm, and 2 mm at the edges. Plus, you also need to add 2 mm, if you count the area of the metal edging of the case from above.

Of course, a triple selfie sensor with advanced depth recognition technology (works like Kinect) – this is incredibly cool and allows you to almost instantly know your face to unlock the device, but from the headliner of the brand I would like less cuts and black lines.

At the bottom there are: a slot for a SIM card protected from getting wet, on the back side combined with a notch for expensive nanoSD Huawei NM Card (regular microSD will not work), microphone, USB Type-C input and speaker. There is no traditional 3.5 mm headphone input.

At the top there is another microphone and an infrared sensor. There is no standard speaker from above, since the smartphone transmits sound directly through the glass during calls.

At the back is the Huawei logo and a huge round quad camera Leica with flash.

60 Hz 6.53-inch OLED protected by 3D glass Gorilla glass 6 and has a resolution of 2400 x 1176 pixels. The density of the dots is 409 ppi. The aspect ratio is 18.5: 9. The average brightness is about 400 nits. The maximum brightness in automatic mode is about 600 nits. The minimum is 0 nit.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro

In dark rooms, using a smartphone is a pleasure because of the real black color, which allows the picture to achieve excellent contrast and depth. In the sun, the image is well read.

It is a pity that the device was not enough to support 1440p, which would allow it to launch the corresponding high-resolution content, but everything looks clear anyway. When watching videos and images in Full HD format (and higher), the picture never splits into pixels, and full support HDR Together with real black, you can enjoy the magnificent color depth with bright lighting effects.

As I wrote above, due to the curvature of the screen on the sides at the edges, a strip effect appears, but otherwise the uniformity of the image is excellent with excellent color reproduction and viewing angles.

The colors of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro are saturated, but not acidic. There is a second mode with increased brightness to choose from, but in most cases the default option looks more natural.

In addition to the unusual design with a “waterfall”, the flagship camera, which has four lenses, became the second important feature of the smartphone. The design is so serious that it takes about a third of the back of the smartphone.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro

The following modules are integrated in the main module of Huawei Mate 30 Pro: 40 MP movie camera Cine camera with f / 1.8 aperture, 40 MP ultra-sensitive camera SuperSensing Camera with f / 1.6 aperture and optical image stabilization, an 8 MP telephoto lens with f / 2.4 aperture and optical image stabilization, as well as a 3D camera with a Time-of-Flight-lens from Huawei. The device supports phase and contrast focus, as well as proprietary technology of intelligent image stabilization.

There is a triple optical focus, a fivefold hybrid or thirtyfold digital. In addition, you can take wide-angle shots.

The operating system recommends using the default settings, where the camera shoots at 10 MP. In this case, zoom, wide-angle shooting and so on works.

Photos taken on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro are incredibly high quality. Details are perfectly visible – day and night. I tried to shoot in a nightclub with very dark lighting, in the evening and at night, and the frames were still excellent. Pixels, if any, are minimal.

Triple and fivefold zoom works great, allowing you to get clear pictures of even the most distant objects. And thanks to the excellent stabilization, the picture is not smeared. In this case, even the wide-angle copes well and almost does not lag behind the rest of the modules.

It is important to note that when creating night shots, the Mate 30 Pro does not pursue realism, therefore it greatly brightens certain parts of the image, such as the sky, making the picture bright. Those who do not like this will have to use professional mode with manual settings.

In portrait shooting, the smartphone copes well with focusing on the subject, blurring the backdrop. There is also a panorama mode, HDR shots, monochrome shooting, selfies with 3D emoji, several filters, lighting effects and so on.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro can also shoot video format up to 4K 60 FPS. At the same time, the system provides excellent optical stabilization, allowing you to record videos on the go. Videos come out clear even in dark rooms. In this case, sometimes the area around the lenses can become hot.

Another important feature is the creation of super slow motion video: the gadget can shoot short clips in 1080p at 120, 240 or 960 FPS, or at 720p in 1920 or 7680 FPS! It looks funny, but the quality drops significantly relative to ordinary shooting, so it is better to use it only in well-lit rooms or in the sun.

When working with the camera, I was not impressed only by the strange option of shooting in split-screen format, when the gadget records the image in front of itself in both normal mode and with the zoom. Perhaps this would be useful somewhere, if not for the shaking effect from the lack of stabilization of the half that comes with the zoom. In this mod, for some reason, only one part of the video is stabilized by the system, and the other is not.

As for the selfie camera, here are installed: 32 MP module with f / 2.0 aperture and a 3D camera for determining the depth, which allows you to safely unlock the device using your face. “Gadgets” turn out to be excellent in clarity and colors, but sometimes there are small problems with cropping or accuracy of blurring the background when certain effects are turned on.

The core of the system is an eight-core processor HiSilicon Kirin 990 (2 core Cortex-A76 @ 2.86 GHz, 2 core Cortex-A76 @ 2.09 GHz and 4 core Cortex-A55 @ 1.86 GHz), which works in conjunction with a 16-core graphics adapter Mali-g76 and additional cores for processing artificial intelligence calculations. This is one of the most powerful systems on the market.

At the same time, the gadget does not overheat. When using a telephone, the processor temperature is usually 35 degrees Celsius. In games, on average, it rises to 50 degrees. The battery temperature is usually around 35-38 degrees.

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro has 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory. As I wrote above, the second can be expanded due to the expensive nanoSD Huawei NM Card.

The system is powered by a 4500 mAh built-in non-removable battery. The gadget supports fast charging using the Huawei SuperCharge branded wire and Huawei Wireless Quick Charge.

The Mate 30 Pro charges from zero to 100% in a little less than 1 hour. The gadget is enough for a day and a half of active use, if you do not play complex 3D games. In games, the smartphone holds about 6 hours of continuous gameplay at maximum brightness.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro

Shell EMUI 10.0.0 based on the tenth “Android” it works very smoothly and looks pretty.

Since Huawei Mate 30 Pro is a new smartphone with a fresh processor, it fell under US sanctions, because of which the gadget lost services Google, including the Google Play store. Of course, there are Huawei’s own services here, but they are clearly not enough.

But since we have a smartphone on Android, then the restriction can be circumvented by downloading special files and installing them in the system. After that, go to the Chinese shortcut that appears on the desktop and activate Google services.

The whole procedure takes half an hour (there are many detailed video guides on the Internet), especially if you have a USB flash drive and an adapter for connecting it to a USB Type-C smartphone. Then you can safely install Gmail, Chrome, YouTube, Telegram, WhatsApp and so on. But for some reason, some games cannot be found in the store. For example, Asphalt 9: Legends. Yes, and most of the audience most likely simply will not be swept away. And this is sad, since the gadget itself turned out to be interesting and very powerful.

It seamlessly plays 4K HDR 60 FPS video. In the test AnTuTu Benchmark test sample Huawei Mate 30 Pro scored 402,416 points:

CPU – 121 771;
GPU – 141 171;
MEM – 75 194;
UX – 62,280;
TOTAL – 402 416.

In Game World of tanks blitz at maximum graphics settings, the device produces an average of 60 FPS – even at times when smoke effects that are difficult for mobile iron fall into the frame.

Shooter Call of duty mobile allows you to set the maximum graphics settings, while it works incredibly smoothly.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds You can also set the maximum settings and enjoy ultra-sharp graphics at 60 FPS.

Smartphone supports 4G FDD LTE (ranges 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/12/17/18/19/20/26/28/32), 4G TDD LTE (ranges 34/38/39/40/41) 3G WCDMA (ranges 1/2/4/5/6/8/19), 3G TD-SCDMA (ranges 34/39) and 2G GSM (ranges 2/3/5/8 (850/900/1 800/1 900 MHz)). Nfc and Bluetooth 5.1 (BLE, SBC, AAC, LDAC) in stock.

You can listen to the sound files .mp3, .mp4, .3gp, .ogg, .amr, .aac, .flac, .wav and midi. Video – 3gp and mp4.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro

Huawei Mate 30 Pro – This is a great smartphone with a powerful stuffing, a nice design and a smart camera, which could be much better if it were not for the problems with the services Google. Of course, you can restore the main functionality manually, but this is not always convenient, a small part of the applications for some reason remains unavailable and most users simply do not want to bother with this. If you are not an enthusiast of mobile shooting, then in my opinion it is easier to take another device, for example, the same Huawei P30 Pro. Or wait for China to settle its problems with the United States.
