Decent Game, But Problems: Digital Foundry Tests The Medium Horror On Xbox Series X | S

Specialists from the team Digital foundry tested horror The medium in versions for new generation consoles Xbox series x and Xbox series s… They praised the work of the studio artists Blooper Team and an atmosphere of adventure, but noted that the developers had to make compromises on various issues.

  • Thanks to the capabilities of modern hardware, the studio was able to create a game capable of rendering two worlds in parallel and allowing you to simultaneously navigate through them. This is a very resource intensive task.… For example, to handle effects such as depth of field and motion blur, The Medium requires twice as many resources as modern games on average… At the same time, while moving between worlds sometimes some textures and models may not be loaded right away, including the model of the main character… This is rare, but it happens. Items on the menu also periodically displayed in low quality, and then quickly “turn” into full-fledged ones. Perhaps such moments in the future will be corrected with patches.
  • The Medium supports hardware ray tracing to handle reflections in a number of locations, but only on Xbox Series X and PC… At the same time, on the flagship console, the detail of reflections is quite low, and on the Xbox Series S ray tracing absolutely not (SSR is used here – reflections based on frame information). Experts from Digital Foundry attribute this to the fact that the game takes place in two worlds at once – there is a heavy load of technology on hardware.
  • The game works in dynamic resolution. On Xbox Series X – in the range from 1440p to full 4K (more often in 1440p), on Xbox Series S – in the range between 900p and 1080p (average at 900p)… When the screen is divided into parts, where a picture is displayed from two worlds at once, resolution can drop to 900p on Xbox Series X and 648p on Xbox Series S… At the same time, the fixed camera in the case of The Medium allows you to refine the picture.
  • On both consoles, The Medium runs most of the time with 30 FPS… However, it has problems with framing – the picture is “twitchy” in places, which may make it seem that the drawdown is greater than it actually is. The developers have already promised to fix the framing through an update
  • Models of heroes can boast of high detail, but the animation here of stars from the sky is not enough – it is simple, and in some places somewhat awkward. This moment is no longer connected with the hardware, but with the budget of the game. The Medium is still not marketed as an AAA blockbuster.

Overall, Digital Foundry recommends The Medium for review, calling it the best game by the Blooper Team… Despite some rough edges and shortcomings due to the lack of a large budget, it offers a truly memorable story in a unique Polish setting.
