“Work on the sequels was a kind of torture” – review

In an interview with a podcast Roger Deakins series operator “Matrix” Bill Pope said that he was not delighted with the work on the sequels.

According to him, the process of creating the original picture of 1999 was significantly different from what followed. And all good things seem to be gone.

We were no longer free. People watched us closely. There was a lot of pressure. And my soul didn’t lie with sequels. I thought that we need to move in a different direction.

Pope added that on the set there were a lot of “threes” and personal problems, which did not go unnoticed for the final result. No one was at the peak of his form. And besides this, one of the books suddenly interrupted production Stanley Kubrickconcerning work with actors – it was read before filming Wachowski.

The director believed that the actors give the best result if you previously squeeze all the strength out of them.

So we started making duplicates of 90! I wanted to dig up Stanley Kubrick and kill him.

All this turned the production of sequels into “a kind of torture.” According to the operator, who had to do an infinite number of takes of different scenes, this approach did not work.

In addition, the second and third pictures were shot in a row, which only increased the level of authors’ fatigue. This style of work, from Pope’s point of view, dulls the mind and soul, and ultimately the film itself.

As a similar example, he cited a trilogy The Hobbitwhose films were also shot one by one, which affected the result. In the format of the book, this is not felt, since it can be taken and postponed at any time, but the process of filming turned out to be too long.

However, Pope still believes that the team managed to do good work on the sequels, despite all the problems. But, however, he did not engage in the fourth “Matrix” – instead, the film shoots John toll (“Cloud Atlas”)
