Ultimate Gaming Laptop: ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G732LXS (HG092T) Review

Finally, we got to the top-end gaming laptops of a high price category, which are able to compete with stationary ones in many parameters. PC… This time we are talking about the company’s 17.3-inch gaming laptop ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G732LXS (HG092T), which comes with an 8-core processor from Intel Core i9 tenth generation and video card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super… The average price for this instance, for example in the DNS network, is 189,990 rubles… At the same time, in the West, this model already costs $ 3,200, which at the current dollar rate makes the regional price the most profitable when buying.

PACKAGING AND DELIVERY

ASUS ROG Strix SCAR comes in a thick black cardboard box with a plastic handle. The lid folds back and up. Inside there is a laptop without special packaging and cardboard sections that hide the external camera, a folding stand for it and a carabiner for the NFC module. The NFC module itself is located on the right side of the laptop case in a special section.

Separately under the cardboard cover is the power supply, which weighs 840 g and is twice as large as what we saw on the ROG ZYPHYRUS G14. Well, it’s understandable – ASUS ROG Strix SCAR has more system power consumption and battery capacity. Separately in a special box are standard instructions and warranty cards.

LOADING

The laptop is started with the power key located in the upper right of the keyboard. The key is highlighted in a pleasant red color. Unlike the ROG ZYPHYRUS G14, there was no sinking problem here. The button is pressed easily and smoothly. The touchpad has separate buttons for added comfort. I’ve always liked to press buttons more like a mouse.

During switching on, the keyboard is highlighted first in red, and then in several colors. During operation, the logo on the cover of the device lights up. The interval from pressing the power on and until full loading takes 14 seconds, given the proprietary sound saver.

APPEARANCE

The laptop is made in cyberpunk style with an additional pattern on the case, which consists of geometric lines. The gray part combined with these patterns creates a worn effect. At the same time, the metal cover and the case itself are very vulnerable to tactile interaction – fingerprints are visible at a certain angle and in bright light. When charging, the logo on the lid shows the charge level – it’s incredibly convenient. The outlet itself for the power supply is located at the back, which is just great. There you can also find USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A, USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C (with support for DisplayPort 1.4 mode), HDMI 2.0b and network output for wired Internet. As for the location of the charging outlet at the back, this should be the case on all portable devices by default.

The 17.3-inch screen occupies 81.5% of the body. On the left side panel, apart from the radiator grilles, there is only a slot for the Keystone II key fob, which can store information about the settings and user profile. On the right side panel are two USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A and 3.5mm audio jack. The thickness of the screen bezel is 8 millimeters on the sides and 6 millimeters on the top.

In normal mode, the laptop is very quiet – the noise level is below 35db. When working with heavy applications, it rises to 52db. The laptop weighs 2930 g. The thickness is 2.6 cm, the external proportions are 39.9×29.2×2.62 cm.

WORK AND TESTS

The laptop comes with a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, which according to the passport is 66000 mWh. That’s less than the 14-inch ROG ZYPHYRUS G14. One hundred percent charge will be enough in standard mode, such as surfing the Internet, reading or working in editors for 6-7 hours. In active gaming mode, the laptop runs for about an hour and a half.

The computer itself was produced in July 2023. Inside it is an Intel Core i9-10980HK processor, 4600 MHz, two memory sticks for 16 GB DDR4-3200 DDR4 SDRAM (@ 1600 MHz) with a maximum frequency of 3200 MT / s from Samsung, two solid-state disk drives in RAID 0 mode INTEL SSDPEKNW010T8 (NVMe v1.3.0) for a total of 1907 GB GB, integrated network adapter Intel (R) Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz version, video adapter based on Intel (R) UHD Graphics (1 GB) and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super (8 GB) ). Intel Comet Point PCH – cAVS is used as a sound solution.

Screen – IPS panel 17.3 (382x215mm) with a resolution of 1080p (1920×1080 @ 300 Hz). The Sharp-based matrix was produced at the end of 2019. At high frequencies, the display has a very low contrast ratio (750: 1), so there will be obvious problems in the sun.

The average brightness is 310 cd / m2. As you can see from the tests below, the level of light is minimal. Black looks natural.

Returning to the case, the radiator grill is located on the sides of the case. But the system noise is very noticeable, like a stream of water, when starting games and using heavy applications.

In standard mode, AIDA64 displays the following temperatures:

  • CPU – 48 ° C
  • GPU – 41 ° C
  • INTEL SSDPEKNW010T8 – 32 ° C
  • INTEL SSDPEKNW010T8 – 34 ° C

CrystalDisk Info tests indicate that the hard drive temperature rises to 44 ° C. The GPU reached between 40 ° C and 73 ° C.

The hard disk speed in Crystal Disk Mark was a record 2801 MB / s for reading and writing 2744 MB / s.

In graphics tests, the GeForce RTX 2080 Super (8 GB) performed fantastic. In 3D Mark TimeSpy, the system showed 61 and 55 frames per second. Final Fantasy XV Benchmark performed very well.

In Unigine Superposition Benchmark with extreme settings, the system showed between 36 and 60 frames per second.

In games, the system also behaved differently. DOOM Eternal ran 180 to 300 frames at high settings. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was also successful – here the stress test showed an average of 65 frames per second. And finally, Shadow of the Tomb Raider showed 81 frames per second with beams on.

According to all tests, ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17 G732LXS is the ultimate gaming laptop, which is comfortable to play in all modern projects. Built-in acoustics are of average level. Worse than the ROG ZYPHYRUS G14, which had four speakers. There are only two of them. But with good bass. Pop music, like Taylor Swift’s latest album, sounds good.

In real conditions, the laptop is heavy, although it sits comfortably on your lap. Copper radiators on the sides actively give off heat and the case heats up quite noticeably. The fans make a noticeable noise during the game. Typically, Intel-based solutions usually have a very high temperature, but in this case the thermal interface is made of liquid metal, so this is one of the best options on the market at the moment in terms of maintaining high processor frequencies under load, and the point is, apparently, in the video card.

ASUS ROG Strix SCAR G732LXS is the ultimate gaming center with a large screen, powerful processor and convenient farm factor. Battery and battery life along with weight are its main concerns. Of course, it is not very suitable for daily trips, but for outdoor activities or work outside the city it will be ideal. And this is the most powerful gaming system we’ve ever seen in a mobile case.
