Time to rest: Nintendo expects nothing more from the portable 3DS console

Over the last fiscal year, demand for 3DS declined immediately by 73%. From April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2023 Nintendo sold a total of 690 thousand portable consoles of the family. Game sales also fell – by 62.3%, from 13.22 million to 4.99 million.

Interest in the system is expected to continue to fall in the coming fiscal year. Nintendo itself has not yet announced the termination of its production, but in fact does not expect anything from it. For the first time 3DS was not included in the annual plan – the manufacturer no longer makes any official forecasts for sales of games and hardware.

Nintendo 3DS was released in 2011 and continued to receive games from Nintendo until 2019.

As of March 31, 2023, the 3DS family sold 75.77 million consoles worldwide. The main bestsellers from the platform holder on it were:

  1. Mario Kart 7 – 18,710,000 copies
  2. Pokemon X / Y – 16,450,000
  3. Pokemon Sun / Moon – 16,180,000
  4. Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire – 14,270,000
  5. New Super Mario Bros. 2 – 13,340,000
  6. Super Mario 3D Land – 12,700,000
  7. Animal Crossing: New Leaf – 12,550,000
  8. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS – 9,590,000
  9. Pokemon Utra Sun / Ultra Moon – 8,770,000
  10. Tomodachi Life – 6,590,000

In total, 383.11 million copies of games were sold on 3DS. Interestingly, at Switch this indicator is already 356.24 million (excluding releases from eShop that do not have physical versions).
