three-quarters of gaming industry revenue comes from microtransactions – review

Newzoo analytic group updated its annual report on the state of the gaming industry. In addition to analyzing the overall picture, it contains a forecast for the coming years.

According to analysts, this year the games will bring their creators and publishers $ 159.38 billion in profit. For comparison, last year this amount was 145.7 billion, and in 2023 it will exceed 200 billion.

The fastest growing market segment is associated with microtransactions. This year, they account for 74% of the money spent by all players, and in three years they can grow to 77%. You can add money for console subscriptions to this – this year they will bring 4% of the profit.

At the same time, in 2023 boxed publications will cover only 9% of the profit, and digital versions – 12%, which together makes up a quarter of the total revenue.

In 2023, almost half of the gaming industry’s total profit, namely $ 78.4 billion, came from Asia and the Pacific. This share increased by 9.3% compared to last year.

According to Newzoo forecasts, the game market will continue to develop dynamically. By the end of the year, the total number of gamers in the world will be about 2.7 billion, and in 2023 will exceed 3 billion. This year, 2.5 billion players prefer mobile devices, 1.3 play on PC and 0.8 billion on consoles.

Analysts at Newzoo also noted that the most popular games are slowly beginning to fulfill the roles inherent in the media. They become a platform for virtual interaction between players who go beyond the boundaries of standard entertainment. For example, we remember how recently the games became a meeting place for Hong Kong protesters.
