Thousands of Koreans lined up in front of stores hoping to win the right to purchase Nintendo Switch

The new coronavirus infection COVID-19 has seriously affected the lives of billions of people around the world. In conditions of widespread isolation of the population, games became an alternative to many types of leisure, and the market itself is experiencing an unprecedented boom.

The Nintendo Switch hybrid set-top box launched in 2017 stands apart, the demand for which far exceeds current stocks. The explosive growth in popularity is largely due to the multifunctionality of the console, since it can be used as a regular portable gaming device, as well as connected to a TV.

Due to limited supplies, some stores and venues organize lotteries where participants are given the opportunity to purchase a Nintendo Switch. This approach is very popular in Japan, but recently retailers from other countries have increasingly resorted to it.

So, at one of such events in the South Korean city of Suwon, an impressive crowd of 1000 people gathered. At another event, already in Daegu, more than 500 people came to try their luck at the store at the same time.

Special editions on the trading floors the console in the style of hit Animal Crossing: New Horizons resell at very high prices. In order not to create unnecessary confusion, on April 20, the Nintendo Korea division was even forced to publish an explanation that this publication will still be on sale – it is temporarily not available.

By the way, the South Korean authorities have taken a very active position in the fight against the new virus, conducting a large number of tests and tracking people in contact with the sick. That is why only 255 people have died in the country today.
