The Magical World of Imperial Russia from a Parallel Universe: Review of the “Shadow and Bone” series from Netflix

Company Netflix continues to master popular literature, reaching out with financial tentacles to the epic Lee Bardugo about the magical world of imperial Russia from a parallel universe.

Taking inspiration from the history of the Russian Empire, Lee wrote a completely traditional female novel with a love triangle, an exceptional and talented heroine and all other elements of literature for girls. But since the story of the relationship between Alina Starkova and the bad guy Darkling would be too dull for a long film adaptation, the writers Netflix decided to dilute the plot with characters from the book “Six Ravens”, Which never crossed with Alina in the original works. Naturally, the modern agenda also demanded to change the race of Alina and her childhood friend Mal, who suddenly became outcasts because of their skin color. The guys from the Six of Crows got hurt too. And although Kaz Brekker was lucky, and he is quite canon, his partner Jesper Fei turned from a potential bisexual into a pure gay. Especially for him, the scriptwriters even set aside time for a stormy sex scene in the hayloft with the participation of a simple groom, Ivan.

Naturally, the adaptation was not without traditional themes of the modern left-liberal agenda, such as girl power and the formation of a strong and independent woman. Otherwise “Shadow and Bone”As a whole repeats the plot of the original. The state of Ravka is divided into two parts by the Shady Canyon, which is home to dangerous carnivorous creatures. The canyon itself was created many centuries ago by a dark magician – Grisha. And now the sun magician, Alina, appears in the world, who can destroy the canyon and make the world whole, but too many want to use her for their own purposes or interfere.

The first book of the trilogy tells about the disclosure of Alina’s talent, her attempts to avoid death and save the world. But the writers are too crumpled to present the story, and many aspects remain not fully disclosed or understandable to people who are not familiar with the original source.

Jesse Mae Lee in the role of Alina and Archie Reno in the role of her best childhood friend Mala are as boring as possible. And this is probably one of those times the director missed the cast. Pulls history Ben Barnes as General Kirigan and Freddie Carter as the adventurer Kaz Brecker. From the female caste stand out Amita Suman and Daniel Gulligan… Their stories and characters are really fun to watch. Otherwise, everything is very mediocre, and if it were not for the “Six” and the juicy picture, then this project would be worth skipping. Anyway, there are plenty of stories aimed at female audiences, with the usual-but-not-like-all heroine with much better implementation and dynamics. For example, the first film in the series “Dusk”. However, for tamping the sofa in the company of a warm cat in rainy weather, the TV series “Shadow and Bone” will not be the worst choice.
