The Last of Us Part II fan finds unused dialogue about Ellie’s tattoo in the game

Forum user Reddit under the nickname taegukie collected from unused phrases in The Last of Us Part II separate dialogue between Joel and Ellie that did not make it into the final game.

The characters discuss Ellie’s moth tattoo, and Joel suggests that the design is based on a hologram of Dr. Daniela Star, Ellie’s favorite Savage Starlight character.

Complete transcript of the dialogue. Spoiler alert!

  • Joel: “I noticed that her, uh, hologram is … a card. It’s a moth. So this is where your tattoo came from? “
  • Ellie: “Well, maybe? It sounded condemning. “
  • Joel: “I’m not judging. Just curious”.
  • Ellie: “Liar!”
  • Joel: “Well, like I said, I’m not judging. I think the moth is nice. “

According to taegukie, this conversation was supposed to take place during the “Found Strings” chapter, where Joel talks about the Savage Starlight comic he was reading.

Probably Naughty Dog originally intended to use the hologram of a moth as the inspiration for the tattoo, but later decided to replace it with Joel’s guitar in order to turn the drawing into something more personal, connecting the two characters.

Recall that Ellie got herself a tattoo to hide the bite mark of the infected, which she first tried to mask with acid.

The desired dialogue sounds at the segment 11:50 – 12:13:
