The challenging year of 2023 has finally come to an end, and we can take stock of the best games of the past twelve months. All nominees and winners were determined by voting, in which our authors and editors took part.
In some categories, there were two winners – they collected the same number of votes.
Discovery of the Year – Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

The indie scene is full of completely different games. The overwhelming majority of them pass completely unnoticed, a loyal community of fans gathers around some, and only a few are destined to explode and attract the attention of the widest audience. Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout from the British band Mediatonic falls perfectly into the latter category.
Uncomplicated gameplay, general accessibility and pleasant visual and sound design helped the game about falling beans literally occupy the information field for several months. Whether the Mediatonic team will be able to maintain their remaining player base is a big question. But the debut, no doubt, turned out to be very bright.

A remake of the 7th “Final” breathes new life into the classic story. Fans breathed a sigh of relief – after a series of failures, Square Enix was able to recover and create an exemplary reimagining of the cult game 23 years ago. It was amazing to return to Midgard and experience on its streets everything anew in a three-dimensional perspective. A world filled with details, subtle work with favorite moments, a multifaceted combat system, beautiful graphics and an enchanting soundtrack captivate instantly.
The authors are determined, and this is encouraging, but let’s hope that the rest of the remake will be at least on the level. Fans have the most questions about the new plot aspects, so it is interesting to see the development of the laid down ideas in subsequent iterations. And, of course, I really want to see how the rest of the locations, events and characters will play with colors in a new representation.
Innovation of the Year – Dreams and Microsoft Flight Simulator

Dreams is a unique project in many ways. Simple and straightforward game creation engines are not uncommon in the industry, but the Media Molecule team went further and allowed PlayStation 4 users to create their own objects from voxels, animate them, combine them into entire 3D scenes and build a sequence of levels and locations. With its intuitive interface and extensive designer capabilities, Dreams can be an ideal platform for prototyping games and even small masterpieces. The main thing is that Sony will continue to support this project and encourage creators. A good advertising campaign is needed, videos with examples of creations on YouTube are not enough – while Dreams has a relatively small audience.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is an exemplary project in a rare genre, rightfully called a next generation flight simulator. While other games offer new mechanics and ways of solving problems, Microsoft Flight Simulator is striking in scale. The fact is that it recreates the entire globe with different weather conditions, megalopolises and airports, and the detailing of aircraft is at an all-time high level. We have never seen anything like this.

Microsoft continues to amaze with solutions designed to restore the trust of Xbox fans and the interest of the widest possible audience in the brand.
Yes, we, in general, have long been accustomed to the fact that an American company is acquiring another studio – this has happened more than once in recent years, but last fall Microsoft was able to really surprise. And it’s not even the colossal amount of the deal ($ 7.5 billion) – the Americans in one fell swoop got the rights to some of the most iconic gaming series of recent decades: The Elder Scrolls, DOOM, Wolfenstein, Fallout – all this and much more is now inextricably linked with Microsoft. and the Xbox ecosystem. This turn of events will inevitably change the balance of power in the video game industry, and we can only watch and wait for new projects.

The Last of Us: Part II is a game of contrasts. The developers now and then draw multiple parallels between the characters, narrative techniques and thematic elements. It is for this purpose that the project uses flashbacks that refer the player to critical episodes from the life of the central characters. But the museum’s birthday scene carries with it another important function – it is the culmination of Joel’s paternal love for Ellie, a light and endlessly touching episode, as if written as a sincere gift for fans of the original The Last of Us. And about the diligence with which Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker breathed life into this section, it is simply useless to write – there are simply not enough colorful epithets.

The Naughty Dog studio has always been distinguished by the high quality of their games, but the post-apocalyptic story about Ellie was able to really surprise. On the outdated PlayStation 4 hardware, we saw a brain-blowing picture in every aspect. Working with light, detailing the environment, working out procedural animations and motion capture … but most importantly, the scale of everything that happens. This is a gigantic game, every corner of which is made with diligence and attention.
Naughty Dog’s staff is filled with some of the most highly trained artists and technicians who have developed their own tools to create this kind of image. They have practically no analogues in the industry. We look forward to their PlayStation 5 games.

Taking on the development of a new blockbuster for Sony consoles, specialists from Sucker Punch set themselves an incredibly difficult task – to recreate the setting of ancient Japan, namely the historical period of Kamakura, during which the Mongols invaded the country in 1274. As a result, the work of the Californians was highly appreciated by both the gaming community and critics. The Japanese themselves, including the developers of Yakuza and Final Fantasy, were delighted with the style of Ghost of Tsushima.
The world of the game turned out to be incredibly picturesque – we spent weeks in the editorial office in photo mode, admiring the local views.
Of course, one cannot fail to note the curtsey towards Akira Kurosawa’s films – they were the inspiration for the developers when creating the game.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps, being built on the Unity engine, which is rarely associated with graphically outstanding games, can hardly compete for the title of the most technologically advanced game. But this is easily made up for by the efforts of the artists who gave us this year one of the most colorful, fabulous and vibrant worlds.
Each location of Ori and the Will of the Wisps has its own unique style: blue lakes, snow-capped valley, oppressive darkness of dungeons – literally every corner of this world makes you want to stop for a second and click another screenshot.

It always amazes how the masters of their art approach their business and are able to give new vivid impressions even with the smallest changes. Final Fantasy VII’s fresh soundtrack arrangements are captivating and never letting go. The grandiose orchestral accompaniment enhances every degree of experience.
More than 150 tracks carefully illustrate the situations the heroes face in the process of passing, and complete the feeling of being in Gaia.
The soundtrack of Final Fantasy VII Remake presents a whole spectrum of genres and stylistic solutions – from battle marches and symphonic works to acoustic losses and calm melodies.
It seems to us that the themes of the protagonists and compositions sounding to the accompaniment of the fateful meetings of the heroes turned out the best. Each time you catch yourself thinking that you are just standing, listening to music and digesting all the impressions you have received, anticipating future events. Recognizable from the first notes and instantly memorable tracks of Final Fantasy VII are an integral part of the game, capaciously complementing it. This musical material characterizes an entire generation of gamers and will forever remain on the tables of the cultural heritage of the gaming industry.

CD Projekt RED put a lot of effort into creating the gloomy and aggressive atmosphere of Cyberpunk 2077. At the same time, in our opinion, the developers approached the selection of the music that sounds in Night City very successfully. On the streets, in clubs and on the radio, players hear a huge number of interesting compositions.
Many tracks were written by famous artists specifically for the game, some were bought out, but the final combination is so successful that it has already taken a firm place in the home library. Deep and dark vibes, intertwined with beautiful futuristic ambient, are kaleidoscopically replaced by metal, aggressive rap and electronic synthwave. By far one of the brightest musical experiences this year.

A good sound design in a game is when a whole complex system is tied to the breathing of the characters, within which the player consistently hears a variety of types of breathing: from calm and barely noticeable puffing to moments where the characters greedily gasp for air. Good sound design in a game is when it takes a couple of dozen Twitter posts to describe the sound effects of broken glass alone. A good sound design in a game is when accurate hits on enemies are accompanied by such a cacophony of effects, that not unconsciously wrinkle your face is almost impossible… Good sound design in a game is The Last of Us: Part II.

The developers of Cyberpunk 2077 decided to play in the territory of games with an emphasis on cinematography, and they did it well. Yes, the technical part of the long-term construction at the start turned out to be problematic, especially on consoles, but there is nothing to blame directly on the Polish scriptwriters – the main plot keeps a high pace of narration all the time, constantly throwing up new twists and turns. The game has many memorable characters that are interesting to follow, and Johnny Silverhand is a completely separate song – one of the best heroes of the outgoing year.

The protagonist of “The Ghost of Tsushima” at the beginning of his journey did not seem like an interesting character. However, the scriptwriters managed to show the development of Jin and reveal his character, making a legendary warrior out of a stereotypical and predictable samurai, who is feared even by the most ferocious Mongol conquerors.
We will not be surprised if, after the successful sequel, Jin Sakai becomes one of the PlayStation mascots of the Drake and Kratos level.

The Resident Evil 3 remake invited players to return to Raccoon City and relive the beginning of the zombie apocalypse along with the fearless Jill Valentine. The developers had a difficult task – to give the fans of the game new sensations from old events and at the same time not to lose touch with the original. This was largely achieved thanks to the new image of the heroine.
The developers borrowed the appearance for Jill in 2023 from the charming Russian model Alexandra Zotova, who, in turn, may remotely resemble the popular actress Milla Jovovich.
While the original The Last of Us was in many ways a subtle analysis of Joel’s complex psychological portrait, Part II focuses on the complex nature of the matured Ellie. Through the prism of a terrible loss, and the subsequent destructive defense mechanism, the girl reveals herself to the players in a completely atypical color – she is weak, vulnerable, frighteningly furious, and very human. In a word, such that you will not be able to forget her soon.

Everything flows, everything changes, but there are always exceptions to the rules. Tifa delighted us with its forms back in 1997, and by 2023 it has only become more beautiful and juicier – like a well-aged wine.
The level of attention to the charms of Mrs. Lockhart could be judged by the many excitements before the authors showed her game model to the public. The result met all expectations – it is impossible to take your eyes off the girl. Moreover, Waifu is now sporting three different dresses in one of the legendary scenes.
By the way, there are more moments with her in general, and the impeccable voice acting from Britt Baron only adds to the charm of this gorgeous lady with pumped up muscles of the press and buttocks. We are waiting for the development of the topic in the sequel!

The Last of Us Part II keeps you close to the screen from start to finish, captivating with a variety of gameplay mechanics and unexpected moments. The bold idea of presenting the same story from two points of view paid off.
Changing the main character in the middle of the walkthrough brings variety to the gameplay and does not let you get bored, and the ending causes a strong emotional outburst, leaving you alone with your thoughts for a long time.

The shooter genre has changed forever with the advent of headshots. The player’s ability to get where needed made it possible to clear the levels much more efficiently and faster, and the process felt very pleasant. It is on these principles that DOOM Eternal is based, or more precisely, elevates them to the absolute.
Of course, no one forbids running with one shotgun, as in the old fashioned way, but playing by the rules, moving as if in a crazy dance of death, like in a dashing slasher, you will understand that the rumors did not lie – they are only afraid of you, because you are really the Executioner of Doom …

Probably Cyberpunk 2077 does not meet the strict requirements of “pure” RPGs, where the player is free to do whatever he wants. Nonetheless, CD Projekt RED is pushing the boundaries of the genre significantly, betting on an effective storytelling, creating an explosive mixture of scripted cinematic scenes, Uncharted-style chases or the freedom of movement using vehicles like GTA.
At the same time, “Cyberpunk” allows you to customize the appearance of the character, retains pumping, a dialogue system with the ability to influence events, variable endings and other aspects of a self-respecting RPG. It’s this unusual fusion of traditional mechanics and elements from other genres that makes Cyberpunk 2077 the hottest RPG of the year.

Обрамлено все это в прекрасную оболочку, где легендарные музыкальные темы Нобуо Уэмацу звучат в красивейших аранжировках, а мрачные трущобы Мидгара заиграли новыми красками. Все это пиршество сдобрено необычной боевой системой, комбинирующей ATB-механику из оригинальной Final Fantasy VII с доброй долей динамичного экшена. Для открывающей главы новой компиляции седьмой “Финалки” — это великолепный результат. Поэтому с замиранием сердца ждем продолжения.

После ремейков Crash Bandicoot компания Activision выпустила на радость фанатам полноценное продолжение приключений Крэша и Коко. Обычно такое желание заканчивается плохо, но мастера из Toys For Bob сумели объединить эти два противоположных понятия и сделать Crash Bandicoot 4 таким, каким хотели видеть его фанаты.
Яркий дизайн, разнообразные декорации, множество уникальных игровых ситуаций, несколько персонажей со своими фишками — и все это с традиционными для серии шутками и гэгами. Crash Bandicoot 4, без преувеличения, можно назвать одним из лучших платформеров всего уходящего поколения.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps превзошла первую часть буквально во всем: игрок имеет куда больше пространства для маневра благодаря огромному количеству дополнительных умений, открывающих как новые увлекательные способы преодоления препятствий, так и возможности противостоять врагам.
Челлендж стал куда более справедливым по отношению к игроку, а мир теперь больше и разнообразнее. Именно таким должен быть образцовый платформер — в меру сложным, но при этом честным и предлагающим разнообразный набор игровых механик.

Вдохновившись классическим японским телевизионным шоу “Замок Такэси”, команда Mediatonic придумала ряд ярких и аддиктивных испытаний, которые пользователям иной раз приходится выполнять в эпицентре полного хаоса. Нам было крайне приятно увидеть всех боссов из оригинальной Demon’s Souls в новом обличии и снова с ними сразиться. Однако выдать ремейку творения Хидетаки Миядзаки такую награду нас заставило не только чувство ностальгии — боссы действительно интересные и могут удивлять по сей день своей историей, геймплейными механиками и уникальным дизайном.
Если вы еще не успели поиграть в Demon’s Souls, крайне рекомендуем не пропускать ремейк для PlayStation 5 в будущем.

Новый проект от Supergiant Games, посвящённый древнегреческим мифам, выстрелили так громко, что стены задрожали даже в офисах крупных студий. Hades выходит далеко за рамки обычного жанрового “рогалика”, предлагая самобытную концепцию геймплея, где игрок, проходя через цикл многочисленных смертей и перерождений, погружается в дебри действительно потрясающего сюжета, достойного любых регалий.
После нескольких отличных проектов в похожем стиле Supergiant Games достигла своего творческого пика в Hades — безусловно, лучшей инди-игре 2023 года.

Уходящий 2023 год был переполнен неприятными сюрпризами. Однако главный подкинула польская студия CD Projekt RED, выбросившая на рынок забагованный релизный билд Cyberpunk 2077. И если на PC, PS5 и Xbox Series X еще можно более-менее наслаждаться красотами Найт-Сити, то версия для Xbox One и PS4 оказалась попросту неиграбельной и напоминала извращенный альфа-тест.
Чуть позже разработчики выпустили пару патчей, которые частично исправили положение, однако до идеала Cyberpunk 2077 еще как до Луны. Но скандал уже не остановить: Sony удалила игру из PSN, игроки растащили баги на мемы, а инвесторы готовят судебные иски. Так что в 2023 году и золотой унитаз оказался соответствующим.

Новое детище Sucker Punch Productions не произвело революции в игровой индустрии, но сумело завоевать сердца многих владельцев PlayStation 4. Меланхоличная история про самурая, который спасает свою родную землю от нашествия монгольских орд, не только выглядит потрясающе с точки зрения арт-дизайна. Она еще и наглядно показывает, что будет, если Ubisoft перестанет эксплуатировать франшизу Assassin’s Creed, дав разработчикам достаточно времени на доведение проекта до ума.
Ghost of Tsushima также стала отдушиной для геймеров, которым не пришлись по душе творческие метания Нила Дракманна вокруг The Last of Us Part II, спровоцировавшие целую серию громких скандалов.

Релиз Animal Crossing — всегда праздник, а появление новой долгожданной части на Nintendo Switch выпало на пандемию коронавируса, вылившуюся в различные ограничения для людей по всему миру. В результате New Horizons фактически стала главным досугом для миллионов жителей разных стран, так как позволила отвлечься от раздражающих факторов в компании друзей и близких.
В течение всего 2023 года пользователи отстраивали свои острова, коллекционировали предметы, знакомились с новыми животными и буквально жили в виртуальном мире Nintendo.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons — невероятно медитативная, расслабляющая и аддиктивная. В нее интегрированы уникальные социальные особенности, которые объединяют игроков самого разного возраста и местоположения. Это определенно ключевая игра на Switch в этом году. И главная игра эпохи карантина.

Пока Microsoft готовит залп из всех своих орудий, заряженных проектами свежеприобретенных студий, 2023 год вряд ли можно назвать богатым на игры для платформ Xbox. Но даже в таких условиях американскому издателю есть что предложить своим поклонникам. В этом году больше всего положительных эмоций нашей редакции подарила яркая Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Буквально каждый ее элемент хочется хвалить.
Это проникновенная история о том, как злоба рождается отвержением, украшением которой стал безумно красивый саундтрек за авторством Гаретта Кокера. При этом геймплей игры способен составить конкуренцию лучшим представителям жанра и предлагает геймерам достойный уровень челленджа, не ставя при этом непреодолимых преград для более казуальной аудитории.

Valve вернулась к своей культовой серии в неожиданном для многих формате — VR. Выбрали его потому, что Гейб Ньюэлл и команда Half-Life привыкли выступать двигателями прогресса, и именно виртуальная реальность позволила им совершить сейчас новый шаг.
Alyx вызывает настоящий “вау-эффект”, удивляет высоким качеством исполнения и радует постоянной сменой игровых ситуаций, которые просто невозможно в должной мере воспроизвести в традиционном формате с использованием клавиатуры и мыши.
Ну а сценарий со взрывным финалом, на протяжении прохождения подкивающий ложные догадки, завершает композицию и позволяет поставить Half-Life: Alyx на уровень выше всех VR-игр и ПК-эксклюзивов 2023 года. Про это игру не забудут еще долго — с ростом VR-рынка будет расти и ее популярность.

Геймпад PlayStation 5 доказал нам, что от следующего поколения консолей мы можем получить гораздо больше эмоций, чем ожидалось, поскольку решать будут не только графика и новомодные визуальные эффекты, но и тактильные ощущения.
DualSense уже сейчас дарит новые эмоции от игр. Воспринимается как настоящий некстген. Очень надеемся что разработчики проявят весь креатив в реализации функционала геймпада в будущих проектах.

Студия FromSoftware обладает каким-то магическим влиянием на неокрепшие умы игроков. Игра от Хидетаки Миядзаки и Джорджа Мартина, про которую мы практически ничего толком не знаем, уже второй год будоражит наше воображение настолько сильно, что в сравнении с таинственным и манящим Elden Ring меркнут даже более осязаемые релизы грядущего года.
Возможно, мы уже совсем скоро получим новые крупицы информации по наследнику Dark Souls и сможем рассуждать более здраво, ну а пока томимся в ожидании, придумывая себе грандиозный шедевр.

В этом году мы получили ряд достойных кандидатов на звание “Игра Года”, однако антураж средневековой Японии, да еще и без лишних фэнтезийных элементов, встречается на просторах игрового медиума крайне редко и ощущается очень свежо и оригинально.
Ghost of Tsushima трудно назвать идеальной игрой, однако визуальный стиль, хорошо проработанные герои и грамотно рассчитанная прогрессия открытого мира делают ее действительно увлекательной и необычной. Навигация при помощи ветра и наблюдение за различными животными для получения той или иной награды кажется самой удачной заменой традиционных навигационных приемов. Нам бы хотелось, чтобы больше разработчиков поступали так же изящно в своих открытых мирах.

К сожалению, индустрия кино в этом году находится в огромном упадке. Действительно мало стоящих фильмов вышло, однако некоторые режиссеры успели показать свои творения еще до начала пандемии. Гай Ричи — один из них.
“Джентльмены” (премьера в России состоялась в 2023 году) — это яркая, легкая и ироничная криминальная история с фирменным почерком знаменитого постановщика и колоритными персонажами. Весь год этот год она всплывала как главная кинокартина 2023-го, а посоперничать с ней за это звание может разве что “Довод” от Кристфера Нолана. Но именно “Джентльмены” нам ближе, поскольку каждый криминальный фильм от Гая Ричи — настоящее событие. Невероятно интересно наблюдать за тем, как эволюционирует подход к постановке его историй. Достаточно посмотреть “Большой куш” после “Джентельменов”, чтобы понять, насколько целостнее и комплекснее стали его работы. Возвращение Ричи к корням — безусловно, главное событие.

В 2023 году кинотеатры оказались одной ногой в могиле, поэтому стриминговая война нарастила масштабы. И если позиции Netflix продолжают оставаться незыблемыми, то у других компаний все не так радужно.
В этому году трансформацию претерпела Disney, которая встретила пандемию со спущенными штанами, и только стриминговый сервис Disney+ не дает ей пойти на дно. Именно на его развитие теперь делает ставку компания. А “Мандалорец” по-прежнему остается флагманским проектом платформы.
Второй сезон сериала не способен перевернуть представления зрителей о сериалах. Однако он дает фанатам “Звездных войн” ощущение уверенности в завтрашнем дне. Именно “Мандалорец” теперь становится фундаментом для дальнейшего развития франшизы, давая жизнь новым спин-оффам. А его финал окончательно закрепляет провал Кэтлин Кеннеди, которая последние пять лет втаптывала Star Wars в грязь.

Индустрия аниме тоже пострадала от коронавируса. До действительно стоящие сериалы, к счастью, еще выходят. “Дорохедоро” — самый главный из них.
Аниме сочетает в себе прописанный мир с безумными законами, качественный черный юмор и запоминающихся персонажей, за развитием которых интересно наблюдать. Dorohedoro — это тот случай, когда художники крайне умело используют 3D-графику в визуальном стиле. Такой подход выглядит очень свежо и подает пример другим студиям. С нетерпением ждем возвращения Каймана с пельмешками на экраны во втором сезоне.
