Stalin, Lenin and Mao Zedong: Chinese adorn homes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons with portraits of communist leaders

Despite the recent release of a life simulator Animal Crossing: New Horizons not officially sold in China, this does not prevent Chinese gamers from playing a novelty for Nintendo switchshowing off their gaming achievements in a regional social network Weibo.

In particular, due to the ability to create custom designs, players from China demonstrate their love for the ruling party, as well as decorate their islands and houses with communist symbols and portraits of communist leaders.

So, one of the players hung on the wall of his virtual home portraits, which depict Mao Zedong, Karl Marx, Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin and other significant figures, located next to the flags of China and the Soviet Union.

Another player decorated his garden in front of the house with a huge portrait depicting the chairman of the PRC Xi Jinping and basic socialist values.

However, not all players approve of the spread of political propaganda in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Some gamers advise their compatriots not to politicize the game: “This is exactly what I fear most,” wrote one of the users of the Weibo social network.

“It will ruin the game if it becomes too politicized and starts to cause the wrong emotions,” says another user. “And it will be unpleasant if it causes some anti-Chinese slogans in the game.”

Some players make harmless references in Animal Crossing to an urgent problem in the form of restraining the coronavirus pandemic by China, wearing protective masks on their avatars and setting up checkpoints with points for measuring body temperature at the entrance to their island.

Such examples include a player who has installed banners on his island with the words “Those who don’t wear a mask are not allowed to enter this island.”

Some players, among other things, recreate folk Chinese costumes in the game, demonstrating their national identity to other players.

Chinese authorities tightly regulate video games. Each project must be approved by a government agency. So far, the Chinese authorities have approved only three games for the Nintendo Switch, all of which are about Mario. As a result, most Switch owners are forced to purchase cartridges in “workarounds.”
