Game enthusiasts were able to save a rare game for the console from extinction Super famicom (SNES), which never went on sale. The portal told about this event. Gaming Alexandria, and journalists Digital foundry prepared a thematic video.
Production Hell for Farting Skunk
It’s about the game Cooly skunk (she Punky skunk) from a Japanese studio Ukiyotei. The project was developed at a difficult time: the console life cycle Nintendo coming to an end, and already on sale Playstation. Other problems were superimposed on this.
In 1994, Ukiyotei was supposed to release a game. Metamoru kid guumin for publishing Bullet-Proof Software. However, during the restructuring of the latter (the company was transformed into Blue planet software) the project has been canceled. New Publisher – Visit – suggested using the existing graphics engine for another project.
Although the PlayStation was already sold in Japan, SNES sales in the US were still solid. Therefore, the studio was tasked with creating a project specifically for the 16-bit console. This was also accompanied by a curious moment: in an attempt to please American gamers, the publisher demanded that the main character be made a skunk who attacked enemies with the help of farting.
When the development of Cooly Skunk came to an end, the PlayStation (September 1995) burst into the North American market, causing the SNES market to crash instantly. American buyers demanded to cancel the project, so it had to be redone for the PlayStation.
The long-suffering game was released in 1996 in Japan and only in 1998 in North America, where it was renamed Punky Skunk. The project was quickly forgotten due to negative reviews. In particular, the Americans scolded the platformer for the “outdated graphics”, because other developers of video games rushed to sculpt three-dimensional projects.
Satellites save games
The SNES version was considered irretrievably lost, but Ukiyotei managed to release a demo. However, it was not available on cartridges – Japanese players could download it and a number of satellite communications projects. This is made possible through an agreement between Nintendo and the provider. St giga: The console owner needed to buy a special module, cartridge, and memory unit.
At the satellite service Satellaview had its own merits: access to news, demos and even a remake of the original The Legend of Zelda, which from the satellite loaded pre-recorded sound effects (orchestral music and voices). True, for this it was necessary to play on a schedule.
The Cooly Skunk demo was available for review for a limited time, but one of the players managed to save it on a memory card, and then sold it. Recently, she was found in a store in Akihabara (Tokyo).
In social networks, a cry was thrown to collect money for the purchase of rarities and subsequent publication in the public domain. After reviewing the demo, one of the enthusiasts found that it can be hacked by opening access to the full version of Cooly Skunk, including the final boss and credits.
The creation of Ukiyotei allows you to compare two versions of the crossgen project, which are very similar to each other, but at the same time very different. The PlayStation version boasts better sprites, improved animations and more level exploring capabilities.
The design of the SNES version is more simplified and involves a movement from left to right. But the basic level concepts have remained unchanged: the same boss fights are built almost identically. Also, both versions of the game share the same soundtrack, although the 16-bit version sounds different. The musical series itself turned out to be very pleasant, which is not surprising, because the composers were responsible for it Mega Man 3 Yasuaki Fujita and Harumi Fujita.
