Sit at home and play: Coronavirus triggered explosive console sales

Interest in gaming systems has jumped in the world against the backdrop of the global coronavirus pandemic. This is evidenced by analytical data GSD (information on sales in 17 territories is taken into account) studied by the portal Gamesindustry.biz.

Because of the global lockdown, literally millions of people were forced to take refuge in their homes and apartments, and therefore they had a lot of free time. Not surprisingly, in search of entertainment, the population turned to games.

According to analysts, during the 12th week of 2023 (March 16-22), sales of consoles jumped 155% (we are talking about 259,169 thousand units in the EMEAA region). The buyers showed the greatest interest in Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The most significant dynamics were recorded in the UK (+ 126.6% in the first week of the lockdown, + 250% in the second), Australia (+ 285% in the 12th week of sales) and France (+ 140% in the first week of quarantine).

Sales of games on physical media immediately increased by 82%, in digital formats – 53%.
