Safari browser will support WebExtension and HDR video extensions – review

Company Apple She told developers about all the innovations in Safari. According to them, now the browser has learned to work with cross-platform extensions WebExtension, but only in macOS Big Sur. Thus, it will be possible to install the same extensions that are on Chrome, Firefox and Edge.

True, they must first be ported through Xcode 12, and then placed in the App Store. Therefore, the emergence of universal extensions will have to wait.

Also, the web browser now works with the WebP image format, which provides more compression than JPEG, while maintaining good quality. The standard has one drawback – many sites do not yet support it.

In addition, Safari will finally be able to play HDR video. And iOS 14 and tvOS 14 now support the VP9 codec, which will allow you to play videos on YouTube in 4K resolution and with support for extended dynamic range. It remains to wait for the same codec in the browser itself.
