PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan: Japan is the second largest market in the world and an extremely important region for Sony

Japan is home Sony and an extremely important region for the company’s gaming division. About this chapter PlayStation Jim Ryan said in an interview with a British industrial publication EDGE

According to the top manager, Japan – second largest market for the PlayStation brand (if we consider all countries separately, – approx. GameMAG) after the USA.

“Sony’s position is simple – the Japanese market remains incredibly important to us,” Ryan said in response to rumors that the PlayStation division is losing interest in Japan.

The PlayStation chief also pointed to the renaissance of Japanese companies in recent years – the demand for their games around the world is only growing, and Sony is working closely with local producers on both hit co-creation and marketing agreements.

Ryan recalled that Japanese developments were given great attention at the presentations of the PlayStation 5, where, among other things, they announced Final Fantasy XVI as a temporary exclusive for the new console.

As for directly supporting Japanese gamers, Ryan pointed out again that the PlayStation 5 was released in Japan on the same day as the US, while the PlayStation 4 made its regional debut only months after its western debut.… This move should be a demonstration of the company’s commitment to the Japanese audience.

“I would also like to point out that we made a clear message by launching the PlayStation 5 in Japan at the same time as the US. Yes, I read this nonsense (rumors of loss of interest in Japan, – approx. GameMAG.ru). And I will say that many of the comments discussed are inaccurate. Japan is our second largest market. And it’s as important as Sony’s homeland“Ryan summed up.

In the comments, however, some users accused Ryan of guile. Critics believe that for Sony, first of all, games from third-party Japanese developers are important as the main differentiator from the Xbox on the world stage, while the needs of Japanese gamers directly are secondary to it. This sets it apart from Nintendo, which dominates its home market but earns up to 80% of its revenues outside of its home country.

According to statistics, Japan is indeed the second largest country in terms of sales of PlayStation 4 in the world, but by the start of the PlayStation 5, the company delivered three times fewer new consoles to its home region, which it calls important, than at the start of the previous console (about 120 thousand fifth PlayStation versus 320 thousand fourth). At the same time, the UK, one of the countries of Europe, according to already available data, received more than 300 thousand set-top boxes.

However, other players point out that after the start, they did not supply anything else to the UK, and in Japan they ship 40 thousand additional consoles for two weeks in a row (total Japanese sales by the end of November exceeded 200 thousand).

Some Japanese gamers are also unhappy that Sony changed the confirmation button on the controller, adjusting the DualSense layout to the general international standard… It is difficult for Japanese players to get used to the new scheme and they do not understand why it was necessary to change what experienced gamers knew well from childhood.

However, demand for the PlayStation 5 in Japan now significantly exceeds supply.
