No mouse needed: Valve showed trackpad and gyroscope controls on Steam Deck

IGN has released a new video from the First series, where the developers Steam Deck showed how trackpads and gyroscope work. The laptop is equipped with a pair of sticks, and you can also connect a mouse to it, but they will not be needed if you use other control methods.

Valve’s Scott Dalton explained that the two can be combined to choose the most convenient input method. For example, when the user is holding both thumbs on sticks or trackpads, the Steam Deck will activate gyroscope control mode.

The console can be rotated in the air using this method for more accurate targeting in games. Valve believes that in shooters it is much faster to aim with the gyroscope than with the stick. The described method works in any game, it’s up to the developers.

Valve previously announced that the Steam Deck is designed for a 30 FPS game. At the same time, the company did not find a project that the platform could not cope with. The handheld console will go on sale in the US, Canada, EU and UK in December 2023.
