Jim Keller promises to change Intel CPU architecture every five years – review

In the middle of the week, a video appeared with the participation of Jim Keller, one of the developers of processor architectures and “father Ryzen.” He is currently working in Intel, where he is going to radically change the company’s approach to processors.

The engineer said that he was going to introduce the practice of developing processor architecture from scratch every five years. Previously, this was done once every ten years. Thus, this will accelerate the evolution of “blue” chips and ensure overall progress. This is about 29 minutes into the video.

The specialist noted that such changes will require a struggle with the marketing department and victims in the short term in favor of long-term achievements. For this, in particular, it is planned to use several development teams that will simultaneously create several architectures.

The corporation already has processors. Ice lake with microarchitecture Sunny cove, and by the end of the year processors will appear Tiger lake with cores Willow cove. Keller’s influence is likely to show up after this. According to various sources, the new architecture will not be commissioned until 2023-23.
