It’s All Too Bad: Saw: The Spiral Review

Another attempt to revive the series “Saw”Looks like the convulsive efforts of a shipwreck victim to stay on the wreckage of a once majestic ship. “Saw: Spiral”(Spiral: From the Book of Saw) beckons with a flamboyant cast with a heavyweight Samuel L. Jackson and comedian Chris Rock… However, even these two do not cope with a rather weak scenario and bloopers noticeable to the naked eye.

In the center of the plot is police detective Zeke Banks (Chris Rock), who tries to be a good and honest guy against the background of general police brutality. But then a mysterious maniac appears on the scene, who tries to destroy the corrupt police officers using the methods of the Saw. And this connection is the main problem.

If the original protagonist John Kramer tried to change people, giving them the choice and the opportunity to feel the pain brought, then the mysterious avenger simply kills his victims very brutally, in most cases leaving them no chance of survival. The character’s motivation becomes understandable by the end of the film, but even this completely destroys the original idea of the series. And although the director of the second and third films of the series returned to the director’s chair of “Spirals” Darren Lynn Bousman, he could not pull out a very average thriller. Yes, in the world of “Spiral” there was a place for very bloody and cunning traps, but this is clearly not enough to get a really interesting project with an interesting villain and a strong plot.

Spiral dropped out of Saw’s philosophy, and when watching it, the impression was that the cast clearly perceived the project as a hack. Chris Rock is clearly overplaying, reducing all emotions to screaming and punching on the table and walls, and Jackson just sluggishly portrays the once tough police officer. The rest of the heroes flicker backdrops between the bloody traps of the new maniac. Deadly mechanisms are interesting, but the crooked editing even manages to ruin their demonstration.

The ending hints at a sequel, but there is a hope that it will be gone. If you want to watch a real thriller about maniacs with a good production and idea, then pay attention to the magnificent “I saw the devil”, created by the script of Park Hoon-jung. There will obviously be more sense.
