Instead of dad, now a brother: Our first impressions of the NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 …

In 2017, the world first met NieR: Automata – dynamic role-playing action studio PlatinumGames about existentialism, funny rusty robots and angelic vocals Amy Evans… Only artistic solutions of illustrators Akihiko Yoshida and and Yui Nagai enough for Automata to forever leave a deep imprint on the collective consciousness of the modern gaming community. The appearance of the combat android YoRHa No.2 Type B has become a true icon, and Yoko Taro, wearing a strange mask on his head, stood on a par with the most recognizable figures in the industry.

Such a success, of course, signaled to the publisher Square enix about the need not to lose the unexpectedly found dynamics – NieR must live. The company seized the initiative quickly enough – the characters of “Automata” received a huge amount of merchandise, became regular guests in other popular games, and recently the successful Japanese premiere of the mobile NieR Re[in]carnation

Of course, against this background, the reissue of the original 2010 NieR was only a matter of time. An updated version of a bizarre game of the past suggested itself for at least one simple reason – only consoles acted as home to the original. Playstation 3 and Xbox 360… And there, the development has never received a digital release.

The team was instructed to bring NieR back from oblivion Toylogic Inc… The result of the efforts was NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 … – according to the authors, not a remaster or a remake, but a new version of the classic title. Recently we were able to watch several episodes of the upcoming release, accompanied by an unusual digital subtitle, and put together the first impressions of the return of one of the hidden gems of the seventh generation of console systems.

As the name suggests, the foundation for the creation of NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 … NieR Replicant… The fact is that the original project had two distinct forms – Replicant and Gestalt… In terms of content, both versions were virtually identical, but the role of the central protagonist in them was somewhat different. In the Replicant edition, the position of the protagonist was taken by a young man seeking to save his own sister, while in Gestalt the situation was different – the hero was the father protecting his daughter.

In 2010, NieR was published in the West without a subtitle, but the English-speaking audience received the Gestalt, while Replicant has remained a Japanese exclusive until now. Accordingly, even if you were familiar with NieR’s storytelling before, the reissue of ver.1.22474487139 … can feel a lot in a completely new way – some narrative differences and general plot context noticeably affect the perception of the whole story.

It is important to note that the NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 … treats the legacy of the original project with utmost trepidation. In terms of general content, the reissue is as close as possible to the classic NieR. The interface elements (Yona still waving her pen on loading screens), sound effects and color correction of many scenes remained intact (with the exception of adaptation for higher resolution). Even the English localization, with the exception of edits related to the role of the protagonist in the plot, moved here unchanged.

But the general visual part of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 … underwent very serious adjustments. In an effort to add graphic polish to an unsightly 10-year-old game, the Toylogic Inc. decided to work almost without compromise. Thousands of assets were reworked from scratch – all the key characters got completely new expressive models, the environment grew in detail, subtle background scenery turned into vivid, memorable landscapes. The total amount of geometry that has grown has not only breathed more life into the picture, but also filled the gaming locations with new meanings – now in abstract buildings, echoes of bygone times can be easily discerned.

But perhaps the biggest surprise of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 … was a completely redesigned animation system. The heroes of the original NieR moved in a very caricatured manner – each action took a limited number of frames, and the hypertrophied movements treacherously stole any chance of at least minimal entertainment. The reprint corrected this moment flawlessly.

Thanks to the new animation, all combat segments of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 … with a skillful combination of attacks, turn into a vivid show, ideally matched with dynamic musical themes. It doesn’t matter if you are fighting an evil black boar or mysterious shadow creatures. In turn, the increased frame rate not only endows somersaults and pirouettes with the necessary smoothness, but also makes the control much more responsive.

In addition to the visual changes, the NieR re-release brings some nice tweaks to game mechanics. For example, now the casting of spells does not hinder the character in movement, which opens up additional options in battle, makes battles much more dynamic and allows you to more often experiment with magic and your positioning.

Another important aspect of NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 … which attracted the attention of the publisher Square enix, is a new voiceovers and a re-recorded soundtrack.

In the case of dubbing (you can choose both English and Japanese), a lot of work has been done in order to give voices to all previously “dumb” scenes. Both key characters in previously unvoiced episodes and insignificant secondary characters who are ready to give the hero useful advice, complain about a difficult life, or add some interesting detail to what is happening on the screen can now speak.

With music, the situation is clear. Composer Keiichi Okabe returned to his cult work and endowed it with a new sound – fresh arrangements have not lost their unique melancholic style, but at the same time excellent instruments and even original segments that are not inherent in old tracks are sometimes guessed in them. For ver.1.22474487139 … Okabe also wrote completely new compositions.

Loudest of all, based on what was seen in favor of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139 … says the amount of labor that went into producing the reissue. Obviously, the Toylogic Inc. and Square Enix wanted not only to introduce the forgotten title of the past to a new audience, but also to present it in the most attractive way. For fans, this is a chance to relive an informal story of love, hatred and enmity from misunderstanding. And for beginners, the project promises to be the perfect ticket to the violent fantasy of the heartless sadist Yoko Taro.
