In the final of season 12 of Doctor Who, the authors changed the canon – review

March 1, the final episode of season 12 was aired Doctors Who entitled “Eternal children” (The Timeless Children) from Chris Chibnell, in which a number of famous moments of the character’s canon were expanded and rewritten.

Followed by spoilers for the finale

One of the changes refers to an episode of the period of the fourth Doctor called “The brain of Morbius”, which refers to the secret versions of the hero that existed before the Doctor in the performance William Hartnell.

According to the last episode, this version is no longer considered the First Doctor, since before it there were other character reincarnations. With this move, the authors also explained the appearance of the mysterious version of the Doctor, which debuted in the fifth episode of the season.

In addition, the Doctor is now considered the very first Time Lord. The memory of past reincarnations erased him Gallifreytsy. It also turned out that before the Doctor was part of a certain “Division” (The Division), operating outside the framework of the Time Lords – and this, apparently, greatly influenced his future lifestyle.

Among other things, the authors reveal that the Time Lords actually … they were not. They stole the ability of regeneration from a certain alien child from another dimension, which was saved by one of the researchers. The indigenous people of Gallifrey, calling themselves Shabogans, have introduced regeneration ability into the genetic code of future generations.

The person from whom they stole this ability was one of the “forgotten” versions of the Doctor – The Timeless Child. Moreover, data on the Doctor’s past during this period were mostly erased.

All this information can, of course, be changed in future episodes, as a number of questions have been left unanswered, and this story in general may change. Many viewers, however, did not appreciate these moves, setting the episode negative.

Others, on the contrary, have noticed that a number of changes are linked to past episodes,
and updating the canon is not something intimidating for a series with such a long history.
